Hi guys so I have a i5 4690k. It says vietnam on the top. My i5 doesn't oc as well as other ppls, so do u think I can rma for a replacement? Also I see a lot of other i5's that say Malay. Is that the best batch? Which stores usually carry the best batch? Thanks.

theres no way to tell. every chip is different.

and i doubt you would be able to RMA because it doesnt oc well, that would be kinda absurd

Unfortunately you can't return your chip just because it doesn't OC as high as you want (unless I just haven't heard that Intel have decided not to be a business anymore). As for the best batch and where to get it, I have no idea. As far as I know they are all pretty random and the "silicon lottery" is exactly what it sounds like.

That's not really how it works, since every batch is made from 1 wafer, you can get bad chips and good chips.

You could kill it then RMA to intel if you care that much, or sell it and spend a few extra $ and buy a different one.

(You do NOT need intel tuning plan if you RMA a dead CPU btw)

Overclocking potential is a crap-shoot. Sometimes you hit it big, sometimes your cpu barely gets past stock speeds (like mine). Nobody will RMA a cpu that doesn't overclock very good. As long as it works at stock speeds, they have upheld their end of the bargain.

If they even allow an RMA then.

They do, friend of mine has killed 4 or 5 4790k's dry ice overclocking, and intel has always hooked him up, as long as the CPU had a valid warranty.

Meh, it's probably cheaper for them to just send a new one anyway. Still, couldn't killing your CPU on purpose potentially damage other components (VRMs is my first thought) as well?

Yeah it's definitely possible, a decent board "shouldn't" die, but it's very well possible I'd imagine.

Definitely best option is to sell it and buy a different one if he really absolutely wants the OC capabilities.

Generally speaking, no, you cannot return a chip for having bad overclocking potential, since the CPU itself runs perfectly fine at its rated speed, you know the one Intel actually meant it to be run at. Vietnam and Malay are not batches... They are simply the places where the processor has been assembled. The batch is the particular set of chips produced form the same material. Therefore, neither place really produces better overclocking processors than another.

It's all luck when it comes to overclocking at it seems you don't have it. ;)

that would be like returning a car because it doesn't go over its top speed, or make more horsepower then its rated for. returning a 5 gallon bucket because it couldn't hold 6 gallons.

sounds EXTREMELY stupid and shouldnt be allowed, but im sure you can return it to whatever store you bought it from and exchange it

Dammit, I was hoping for a good overfilling bucket. Sadly my 5 gallon bucket doesn't hold 6 gallons, thanks for answering my question. I was going to return it but I guess I cant.

blackshades on
