X16 slot query

Wandering how much faster 16x is to 8x or 4x and if multi gpus get slowed down when in 8x?

Why can't it be both in 16x? Technological restrictions? Or does 16x not effect anything?

16x is exactly 2 times as fast as x8 which is two times as fast as x4

unless youre running more than 3 GPUs, there will be no performance difference with using x8 or x4

PCI-e lanes are supplied directly by the CPU, and the amount of lanes is limited by the cpu, and different for every cpu.

SLI/crossfire with two cards in 16x requires 32 PCI lanes from the cpu.

oh i didnt realise cpu had something with it. Going to check mine

PCIe lanes are not exclusively provided by the CPU. AMD FX CPUs do not have a PCIe controller onboard and therefore rely on the northbridge to handle high bandwidth items like RAM and PCIe lanes. In the case of Intel CPUs where they do have a PCIe controller onboard, it's only for PCIe 3.0. PCIe 2.0 x1 and x4 slots are controlled by the PCH("southbridge").

i forgot north bridges were still a thing for AMD, i'm too used to intel lately...
