I'm actually interested in it. Since I started watching white collar.... oh man that show was like tailored to my liking, sad that it ended, but I wanted to learn and stuff. I bought a lock pick set anyways, but I wanted to ask if anyone knows how and actually does it? Not to steal stuff but just because it seems cool to know. And I forget my house keys alot so picking the lock would be pretty helpfull...

EDIT: I know "how" to pick locks, I'm just not good at it

I started doing it a month ago and I really like it, I think it's a super useful skill and a fun hobby. Problem is I've ran out of locks, all the ones in my house I have memorized so I can pick the in 60 seconds easy.

I knew how to do it since I was 6 years old....

it all started when I got locked in a bathroom and the lock was from outside......

and it still happens to me today... the last time it happened the door knob broke so I had to use nail clippers to get my way out at midnight.... If  only I could do this in an elevator cause I get stuck in those a lot too.... tried escaping one already and it dropped 3 floors after the doors open so HELL NO

I've been in a stuck elevator before man, it's scary as hell. My friends and I were being stupid and jumping up and down, and the elevator seemed to bounce, so we kept doing it and it fell like a floor then stopped. Thankfully no one got hurt, but it was a really scary moment, I was 8 at the time. We were all crying and shit. Cuz I thought I was going to get in trouble with my parents lol

well i do have a lock picking kit that i do dable with the biggest thing you gotta remember is the laws these items such as lock picks and what not can be considered burglars tools in states like california and are illegal to possess unless you are a locksmith i believe. another thing to remember is you will probobly cause damage to your lock in some way shape or form if you wanna practice look on amazon they have special sets of locks for lock picking practice. like this: http://www.amazon.com/Blossom-Professional-Practice-Padlocks-Locksmith/dp/B00M5YX3OY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1433305085&sr=8-1&keywords=lock+picking

Yea, I've got a few locks in my house which are never used. Also what would be considered burglars tools? this is the set I bought;

I don't think there's any actual way to damage a lock from picking it unless you are really bad at it and bitch pick the hell out of it or you pick it at least 100+ times.

depends where you live check your local and state laws and thats a pretty decent set you have a number of different picks. but lock picks like that are considered burglars tools and they may only be considered that if youre breaking into someones house or car etc but in some states just owning them is completely illegal.

I'd suggest getting a clear practice lock to use, you can find em on massdrop for pretty cheap every now and then.

thats not neccesarily true in the book i read whenever you pick a lock you run the risk of damaging or breaking it. and if im not mistaken the internals arent made from anything stronger then the stainless steel picks.

The internals normally aren't strong than steel, so yeah they can ware down from from picking. But the internals are still metal so if you are picking a lock properly there should be no situation in which a thin ass peice of steel can brake solid brass.

Something like this might be useful. Probably more cost effective to make one than to buy a kit.

I would like to know how to pick locks. My office has a lot of drawers that we don't have keys too and want to use. We almost drilled them out one day!

Edit: forgot the link

Drawers are actually pretty easy in my experience. I was able to get into my teachers drawer with a couple of lock picks made from hairpins, had permission to do it and she was right there.

ok well think of it this way steel even though its thin can still scratch dent or the like a softer piece of metal thus damaging the lock and possibly making it unuseable.

Also check out this guy he's kinda like the LTT of lock picking: https://www.youtube.com/user/bosnianbill

I'm not saying you're wrong, locks can ware down over time. But the mechanisms inside are a lot more robust than you are saying and it would take a lot of picks before any ware would start to show. It's not like you can stick a pick and the lock would stop working, you'd have to be really agressive with it and pick it for atleast 4 hours straight.
