I second teamviewer, it is free for personal use and I use it almost daily to access my desktop on my tablet and it is very reliable and you can create a free account which has been useful for quick access.  It also has a nice multi-monitor support.  I used chrome remote desktop, but I only did it when I didn't have teamviewer access, because I couldn't install a program on a school computer, I didn't care for the UI.

RDP or Remote Desktop Protocol is build into Windows and there is an official Microsoft application in the App Store for OSX. I use it all the time for work and just basic tasks. The only thing you need to do is some port-forwarding on your router.
