Depends - do you want to use drive pool? The you are stuck with V1. If not, the V2 is a lot better, based on the 2008 kernel. Windows 8, Server 2012 and such also have something similar called Storage Pools, but they are not without their issues as well...

Hi Everyone, i am thinking about making a whs box with 6 2tb hard drives, lsi 9240-8i raid card, Intel Pentium, 8gb of ram, and 4gb nic's ( 1 is on-board) and a 16 port gigabit switch. i have 6pc's. 5 are in one room but have multiple nic's so i was going to run 8 cat 5e cables, to them, just on the other side of the wall of the whs and switch. Then i want to run 4 lines downstairs, i already have one from my router, so all traffic will be directed through the switch. i want to backup all my photos, videos, music, vm's and OS iso's. i don't want to spend more than $1500. If anyone can give advice that will be greatly appreciated thanks!

WHS v1 is end-of-life as of now, and v2 will go end-of-life in 2016. Yes it will last a while, but if you're looking for long-term support, you'd be better off with Windows 8 (if you're just looking for storage pooling), or Server 2012 or Linux if you need server-level features.

WHS's line can not act as a Domain Controller. You'd either need to use the full Microsoft server or samba 4 in linux is suppose to be able to act as a Domain Controller. You could also look at the Essential 2012 server product. It's only $400 and will set up a domain as part of its installation. You can even give it a test run and download it from microsoft.

are you planing to run the raid of the 9240-8i or are you going for software raid?

It would be a lot cheaper to get a IBM M1015 ($100), flash it to "it" firmware and run flexraid ($60)

Ok that is a lot cheaper, but it can run raid 5 so there is no need for flexraid. Correct me if i am wrong please.
