Sennheiser 598 + x-fi fatality Plat. good combo for better overall sound?

Go to solution Solved by SSL,

Then do you have a suggestion to stay within my 300$ keeping the wanted surround and Sennheiser 598 as the headphones?

Don't expect anything useful from that guy. He thinks a $400 DAC is a minimum requirement for quality sound.

The 598 will be fine from your soundcard. Just turn on the surround in the driver controls and you're good to go.

So my G930's broke recently at the hinges and I'm looking to make a slight upgrade in my sound. I have a roughly 300$ limit. Since I have the sound card still, I figured I'd get a good quality headphones with an AntLion Mod mic plugged into my X-fi to get my Dolby Digital surround that I'm so use to having. Use will be of course all PC gaming, movies and little music.

If you guys have any other recommendations or combo's within the budget limit, I'm all hears. I was looking into getting another gaming headset such as the Ear Force Z Seven's or Steel Series H. But I really want better, clearer sound combined with my needed 5.1 Surround without hindering mic or build quality.

598 is a much better choice than the other things you mentioned, try those or DT990, maybe even AKG k7xx if you can find a pair.

I'd recommend trying stereo as well, you may like it more with a proper pair of headphones.

roger, but I'll be able to retain my 5.1 surround as well even with it being a single 3.5mm jack? I know its simulated/virtual and all.

Yeah, you'll just have to enable it in your sound card software.

The K7XX are on Massdrop right now. Although   I got the Q701 myself as I don't like the 3 months shipping time along with the reported rattling

I really don't like massdrop, saving a few bucks and having to wait ages for the drop to finish + receive your product etc..

I'd rather spend an extra bit and get it in a week :/

Hooking decent headphones up to a computer's cheeze soundcard or integrated audio is such a crime. Get a proper DAC/AMP dude. Seriously. Your ears will thank you. You can double or triple the sound quality of headphones with the right equipment vs a garbage source like a computer's soundcard/integrated. Soundcards that live inside computers suck because of all the noise inside the PC. You want the soundcard outside, on your desk. That's where the DAC comes in.

If you buy something like an IFI DSD nano or a Schiit Modi and a Schiit Magni ($200) you will be so much happier.

Intel Inside. Overweight guy in his 30's outside.

It's true, getting even a Fiio E10 and hooking it up to my laptop improved the audio quality by a real 2.9x. Woodwinds were palpably present in the second movement of Beethoven's "Erioica" Symphony (no. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 55).
