I have an 8350 on a 990FXA-UD3 - and soon I'm gonna spend a lot of money on upgrades.

I'm moving into a bed-sit type affair and I've reached a dilemma. I'd like to save some footprint and overall size of my build, but I also plan on OCing my 8350 heavily on water as I'm waiting to change platform. Here I've reached a dilemma. I'd like to go one step down, save money and space by purchasing a PC-06S (which supports mATX) over a PC-07S (which supports ATX) - but this would require buying an mATX board. I can buy an mATX board, but I don't have a lot of money to spend on one - it'd be relatively cheap, and I imagine would impede on my overclocking capacity.

What do you think the loss in overclocking capacity would be? I can't change platforms rn so I'd like to get the most out of my 8350 - but space is also a concern.

In short: Should I move down to a cheap mATX board, or should I stay in full ATX?

No, mATX is just a bit shorter, not worth it.

I have a feeling that you should stay full ATX.

I'd stay full ATX to be honest.

mITX would likely reduce overclocking potential and may also reduce airflow efficiency.

@Tadgh

stay full atx. even in a bed sit you can fit a mid tower,

trust me im a student

There aren't even any 970 or 990 chipset mATX boards afaik.

Well, I came for a definitive answer, and I got one :) thanks guys, I'll stay full ATX

What about upon platform change? Do you reckon I could benefit from a size reduction? I have what I consider to be a really oversize case rn tbh and I don't like it - the Phanteks Ethnoo Pro, practically a full tower.

considering that you'd need a 990fx chipset motherboard to overclock an 8350, and going with a cheap board for an FX8 leads to stability issues at stock speeds.... you should stick with the board you have.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Useful to know, thank you!

switching to intel opens up a lot of options. with a case with decent airflow, a smaller build is completely possible while still being to overclock. upgrading to another am3+ board isn't worth it honestly.

That's what I was thinking, my poor wallet isn't the fattest, being a student :/ (I have a part-time job, it just doesn't pay amazingly)

Can you recommend the S340, out of interest?

yeah great case, solid build, good airflow, decent drive support. cable room can be a little tight if you have more then 2 3.5inch drives but other then that its good. not suitable for custom loop though.
