First off my current parts which are a m5a97 r2.0 for my mobo, a 6300 for my cpu, and for my graphics card a 650 ti boost.

Specifically I was looking at the 8350, 4690k or 4790k. Of which if I go with Intel I'll have to buy a new mobo and overall I'm looking at spending less then 400$ US but am willing to go slightly over. I am also open to other possibilities.

Get the 4690k, It will be able to handle even more powerful GPUs in the future. The 8350 doesnt have much higher gaming performamce than the 6300.

4790k is the way to go while amd is way way far behind in cpu's.

Yes, but if he only games the i5 is plenty. Could save him $100

Edit: 4790k owner here, absolutely beast of a cpu. Big performance boost over my old fx 6300...

True but he says his budget is 400$ mine as well get i7 for 300 or less dollars and a cheap z97 board.so why settle for a i5 at the moment if he can afford a i7.

honestly cpu horsepower is not what he should buy first. personally i would get the gpu. play some games and then decide if i need more cpu. cause dropping hundreds of dollars on something that might only marginally affect your individual experience is not ideal.

plus the 8350 is what i used when i upgraded from my 6300 and honestly i only noticed about 8 fps difference and if i had used a aftermarket cooler on my 6300 i probably could of easily been on par with it. so for like 30 dollars and a little over clocking you could avoid swapping cpus all together

i5 4690k is a better option. If he doesn't do any video editing than there'll be no real performance difference between a 4790 and 4690.

So :

- Gaming + Light video editing - i5 4690k

- Gaming  + Heavy video editing such as montages ~10min vids - i7 4790k

If you really do a lot of rendering in Sony vegas, than the i7 4790k would be my choice. I own it myself and it is great, although I had to replace the stockcooler after a while.....

Grab an evo 212 if you pick one of these.

I currently have the NH-D14 and have my cpu overclocked to 4.2. And for budget its the fact that I'm allotting this amount towards a new CPU I have another set budget for my graphics card. Also I would like to point out that I do plan on doing some rendering on my system.

For all those people suggesting Intel could you also suggest a motherboard to go along with it.

because he won't benefit from the extra threads, and might be able to put the extra money towards another component in the future.

I disagree i rather pony up for a better cpu, i regretted buying a 4690k and realize i should of bought a 4790k instead trust me if you are just gaming than his current setup is fine.i wouldn"t even touch a i5 for gaming not even worth my time. Go big or go home dont cheap out on cpu every gamer has a i7 now a days and they can handle sli and overclocking better.

What will he do when he needs those threads after he bought the 4690k ? Let me guess sell his 4690k and buy a 4790k .my point is kill 2 birds with one stone .

IF he needs those threads.

What he'll do? Render slightly slower. HT isn't magic, and not worth $100 it if you don't render a lot. The 4690k is still plenty fast for rendering too.

Lel, okay.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/8227/devils-canyon-review-intel-core-i7-4790k-and-i5-4690k/3

Notable scores:

Handbrake LQ (cuz H.264 encoding, probably the one OP's using)

4790k - 634.28

4690K - 615.45

Handbrake UHD (it's 4k. Probably optimization issue w/ HT)

4790k - 23.90

4690K - 25

Cinebench (even though 3d rendering wasn't mentioned)

4790k - 948

4690k - 711

"Slow as shit" doesn't apply here. it makes little to no difference in video encoding, and isn't a problem in 3D rendering either, unless you're a professional, in which case get a 5820k or higher.

Trolling lol i know the differents of experience vs trolling before you troll me .

I tried to stream with obs with a 4690k guess what it couldn't do it without stuttering but on the other hand the 4790k did it just fine with 1080p 30fps so tell me why the 4690k failed .from my experience with i5 i will never buy one or even if it was given to me. Oh max i could overclock the 4690k was 4.2 but it will blue screen every 15 minutes or so and the i7 i got to 4.6. Stable.

Not sure if trolling or not.

There is NO difference at all if it comes to gaming performance between the 4690 and 4790.

Also if you say the 4690 is a low budget intel "crap cpu" well, I can't even take you serious anymore.

Plus keep in mind that if you render a 5min 1080p vid, that the i7 might be 1min faster, but I doubt that'll be worth 100 bucks.

Keep in mind that I have the i7 4790k myself, although I wouldn't mind having the i5 4690k as I only render small vids.

Theoretically it should be about 1.00*1.25 (to account for clock speed) = 125% the speed of the 4690k, now to adjust for hyperthread (assuming each hyperthread is about 30% of a real core) would put it at about 125*(30*4)=150.

About 50% faster than a 4690k, theoretically.

Someone here that's still awake should try and disable ht, encode a video, enable HTML, and encode the same video, and time each as a test.

u can buy a 4690k and get a cheap z97 board at around 45 pounds. Not entirely sure what that is in dollars but im thinking around $80.
