So im currently tight on a budget and I was wondering if i get a gtx 960, can I in the future use sli and place a gta 970 next to it?

No, if you want to SLI cards. You have to have 2 of the same model. 

The MB is fine.

Nope, you can not SLI cards of different types. Plus H97 doesnt support SLI

A 970 and 960 won't SLI together.

you can only use a matching card type in sli unless you are using the second card for physx (which isnt sli)

You are sadly only able to SLI same model card from Nvidia.

970 with 970. 960 with 960.
