Take a look at these two mobos:

 

1. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4665#ov(rev. 1.0)

2. http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5001#ov(rev. 2.1)

 

As you can see there are less cpu contacts in the middle on the 2.1 rev as on the 1.0. Does this affect anything? Also, why would gigabyte do this (or anyone else)?

Where are you seeing that there are less pins in the socket on either revision? Both should have 1150 :huh:

They have the same number of pins.... They're both LGA 1150...

Maybe I didn't use the correct term, I meant the bigger thing in the middle of the socket

By the looks of those things, they are capacitors. Shouldn't make any practical difference between the two.

Probably an improvement or some changes in the design. Revisions work that way.

Oh, those aren't pins. I'm not 100% sure on what they exactly are, but they've always looked a lot like ICs and Caps to me. Without looking at the specs, they probably made changes to the layout so that it was more efficient/used less parts.

Those are only resistors(or caps), They are in place for stability, Just different ways to get the same result, When there are more of them the heat will be more spread out.

Those are not contact pins, they do not touch the CPU

The bits you're talking about are capacitors, both on the CPU itself, as well as the socket. My best guess as to why Gigabyte would change up the design is the cost to manufacture the board in that configuration. I would assume no impact on performance aside from possibly overclocking, which the H81's aren't really designed for anyways.

Those are most likely capacitors. Resistors are usually black while caps (ceramic type) are brownish.
