Reviving an old PC.....

Let's not get salty.

The 970 vram issue is in the past, let's ALL leave it there. The performance between the 290x and 970 trade blows in alot of areas. We will leave it at that.

Psh, I left it there. A long time ago.

And that was not very NaCl. That was mild sunburn lotion at best.

so basically stick with the 290 or 280

290/x or 970 are both very good options.

What are you talking about? Sandy over clocks like a champ.

It does. I meant that it would be no benefit because you wouldn't get much performance extra from it. A Hyper 212 Evo is $30 extra and it just doesn't seem worth that $30.

So, 35% improvement is not worth it to you?

Your "old computer" CPU is still better than most gaming rigs out there!  Especially if you overclock it.  It can handle any graphics card no problem... the 970 is the current sweet spot in price/performance IMO.

I just don't see it if it's not needed. If I were to OC, (Which I'm not personally a fan of.) I'd wait until my CPU is getting older and needs it. The 2500k could easily max games right now with a good GPU at stock. At gaming, I wouldn't think there'd be a big difference besides on CPU-Heavy games. I'd rather spend more money on things like the GPU or PSU.

If the speed is there why not use it now, instead of waiting later.

It's honestly OP's choice. It's just my opinion. I'd rather not spend $30-40 on a cooler if it's not needed.

OP asked about over clocking, that's what started that.
