Hi,

I have a AMD 6 core cpu, when i access windows task managers performance tab it only says i have 3 cores but it does say that i have 6 logical processors, is there something that would cause the cpu to only use 3 out of the 6 cores?

Im running on windows 8.1

Windows reads the chip like it is. There are three big cores split into six small "cores." The three pairs of small cores share allocated resources that cores would usually have on their own.

It's normal.

wait buy Linus's 18 core xeon hyper threaded showed 32 cores...

Must be a windows 8 thing

That 2699v3 actually has 18 cores, but it also has hyperthreading, giving it essentially one smaller core per real core.

Because it has 18 cores and 36 threads.

Kind of.

Its hard to explain in layman's terms, I actually know what it is.

Yes I know about hyper threading, and its not a smaller core its a "Logical Core"  A.K.A a fake not well optimized core. I was just saying that because It was doing it to a cpu that has 6 modules not 3 cores with hyper threading.... I just remembered half way through typing it that linus doesn't use windows 8...(Only on laptops when hes lazy)

I know exactly what hyperyhreading is, as I said, but I was trying to explain it in layman's terms and did poorly.

And windows 8 shows it as 3 cores because an fx6300 is essentially a 3 core CPU with hyperthreading. (Emphasis on essentially, the difference is both cores in a module max out at 50%)

Its fine i wasn't trying to correct you, but correct myself for not being clear....

OK, sorry, took it the wrong way.

But yeah, its because of how the modules in an FX CPU work. That's all.

Its simple, in FX CPU's each 2 cores are 1 module where those 2 cores use same memory pool, Windows recognises these modules as single core.

You're tardy to the party. Question was already answered (by yours truly)

Basicly he should see 6 cpu graphs.

The AMD FX6300 basicly has 6 physical cores, But the OS cannot see the diffrences between physical cores or logical processors.

Atleast Windows can't.

With some motherboards, you can disable cores inside modules individualy.

But Asus boards unfortunatly can only disable modules.

isnt it because that amd uses modules method, i.e 2 cores per module, thus it has 6 cores, but windows detect the mdules thus we see half the number of cores.

i have the same issue, and this is my understanding how it works.

That's a very probable answer.

He still should see 6 cpu graphs on the performance tab.

Unless topic starter means something diffrent, But the OS does not see modules.

It just sees 6 logical processors.

It may not be the same for Windows 8.1.

As far as i know not.

I had Windows 8.1 installed on my system, i had 8 cpu graphs (8 logical processors) as it should be.

But how many PHYSICAL cores were shown? Did it say 4 physical cores and 8 logical cores? A 4770K will have 8 CPU core graphs, even though it's only a quad core CPU.

8 if i remember this right, but it does not matter.

The OS simply sees the amount of logical processors

But i talk about the amount of cpu graphs.

If op only sees 3 cpu graphs, then there is something wrong, cause he should see 6.

IF op sees 6 cpu graphs, but it says 3 cores 6 logical processors, then that is fine.
