GTA V and new AMD Drivers?

cheeze_tartz

So I am still thinking if I should get a 290 or 970. Yes, I know that Linus did a video on GTA with different GPU's but those were with beta drivers (AMD GPU's specifically). Will the new drivers improve FPS? or should I just get the 970?

There is a HUGE performance increase with the new beta drivers. With my 7870 I went from 35-40-ish FPS normal settings to solid 60 high settings.

R9 290x should pretty much be the same price as a GTX 970.

Either will perform quite nicely for you.

I'd personally get an R9 290x over a GTX 970.

Shot through the heart and you're to blame, 30fps and i'll pirate your game - Bon Jovi

Take me down to the console city where the games are blurry and the frames are thirty - Guns N' Roses

Arguing with religious people is like explaining to your mother that online games can't be paused...

I personally think you should get a 970 as its newer, directx12, less power. The 290 is an amazing card dont get me wrong, the 970 is a better option for the future. If you are down to wait, amd is about to release there new cards soon.

I'd say GTX 970, only due to games now being segregated by features, get the best you can for now...

Until AMD get their shit together, and until they can provide some parity to the situation, the Nvidia 970 would be my pick for now...

/The 290/290X is a beast, esp in GTA5, where mine performs brilliantly,.., but for other titles as well, and maintaining high performance, the GTX 970 is the best bet.

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz

Didn't you ask this already? Like I've seen you recommending the r9 290x?

Yes, but I didn't know that GTA V had beta drivers.

wait, so would you recommend a 970 for higher than 1080p resolutions? Currently have a 1440p but i'm doing a 5760x1080p setup soon.

Still stands,....the performance penalty (driver/featured performance) for some game titles on AMD cards is just not wanting me to advise people into buying them...

Project Cars and Witcher 3's latest fiasco for example... blaming whoever aside.... AMD are behind the ball.

1440p is still a Win for the GTX 970 (remember I'm basing my decision off ALL games performance) not just GTAV.

The gap between the 290X and the 970 is ever so closed at 1440p, but in regards to other games as well, you'd still want the 970.

Until AMD has an answer for gameworks performance parity (290x vs 970) in a lot of titles where the 290x is losing by a LOT compared to the similarly powered 970, I'd go the 970.

5760x1080 is nice, but even then you'd be needing two cards to not lower details, in such 2x 970's would be my answer.

I would usually have chosen the AMD R9 290 series (Brute force), but with some latest release games showing the disparity between two similar powered cards, get the one that performs the best overall in varied games, again.. thats the GTX 970.

Just ordered today a 970 since I'm still on pcie 2.0. I think it will be less of a bottleneck since amd gpu's tend to have more raw power but it doesn't seem to be optimized quite as well. If I'm wrong let me know.

PCIe 2 won't bottleneck you at all, let alone with a 970. Linus did a test a while back and I think anything over 3.0 4x (2.0 8x) was exactly the same. 3.0 4x is what you'll get with 3 way SLI on a Z97 board.

Well, it goes like this: R9 290(ref.)<gtx970<R9 290x(ref.)<gtx980. the performance difference is not that big (maybe 10% between the gtx 980 and R9 290x, but depending on the game). The Maxwell architecture consumes less power (like 80W+ less that's an equivalent of two light balls). I personally would get the r9 290 for being ridiculously cheap and having some high end features (wide memory Bus, 4GB of memory, the architecture) and... constant performance. I did observe, that the new maxwell architecture performs very... funny to say the least, in some games, the performance falls down quite a bit (especially looking at the gtx 960).

There are two options... get the 970 for good power efficiency and nvidia features or the r9 290, for being cheaper, very close in performance and for amd specific features.

Yeah PCIE 2.0 16x won't affect performance yet either.
