Hey guys, I've been debating for awhile on the outlook of my rig within a years time. I recently had the intentions of upgrading my 8320, enough though it still serves me quite well still, with the kind of stuff I do. I've sort of narrowed it down to about three choices, and was wondering how you guys feel about it. These prices below are according to microcenter.

  • Upgrade to a 4790k + Gigabyte z97 Gaming 7 $390
  • Upgrade to a 5820k + Asrock Extreme 4 $430 (probably would have to factor in the cost of a ddr4 kit)
  • Wait for broadwell or skylake

Wanna hang out with me and people like @Theslsamg, @ Ssoele, @BENTHEREN, @Lanoi, @Whiskers, @_ASSASSIN_, @Looney, @WunderWuffle, and @nsyedhasan. Well.... Check out: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/48484-unofficial-linustechtips-teamschnitzel-server-teamspeak/

Just wait for Skylake, as it only comes out in a couple months I believe. It should be cheaper with the options with z170 (If I'm correct that's the name.) and if I'm correct it'll support DDR3.

PC and Peripherals:

Intel Core i3 4150 @3.5GHz - ASRock H97M Anniversary - Kingston Fury HyperX Black 8GB DDR3 @1866MHz - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 960 G1 Gaming 2GB GDDR5 - EVGA 500W 80+ Certified - WD Caviar Blue 1TB - WD Caviar Blue 160GB - Lian Li PC-50 - Linux Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS - Acer P221w 21.5" 1680x1050 60Hz - Kingston Fury HyperX Clouds - Razer Deathadder 3.5G - CM Storm Quickfire Rapid w/ Cherry MX Blues

It'll support both ddr3/4 and the chip set is z170 as you said, socket will be lga1151. Intel is working towards a uni-dimm standard for ddr3/4 support.

That'll definitely be a lot nicer.

As of 2 days ago I upgraded my FX-8350 to a Xeon 1231v3... I could have easily if waited... But i wanted better performance now lol... I know I'll be okay with the performance of the CPU for at least 3 years.. Got 3 years out of my 8350 and decided to upgrade after seeing so many different AAA games being bottlenecked by it.

Point of this post lol, if you can wait, just do it. Like people are saying, newer socket, and a greater upgrade path for a little later on
