Server/NAS Build

Go to solution Solved by hunterman1043,

Yea it is possible to dual boot, however the only caveat to this would be that for a "server" it is recommended to always have it running and booted into the operating system so it can serve what you need on the fly on the go... If ur booted into the windows partition then none of the apache protocols can function since its out of Linux. So for example, you can't try to host a minecraft server and play at the same time unless they have a Linux version or you run it through wine. I don't play Minecraft so idk about that.

But yea to answer ur question, I only use a 30 gig for my server and even that is too much IMO.... Just the smallest I could get my hands on internally without going to a flash drive.... If you are going to have windows on it as well just for the lulz, I would prolly jump up to like 120 gig just to give head room for windows to breathe. A 120 gig ssd is pretty cheap right now..... Only like 99 bucks.

So i am wanting to build a rig to host a 10 player FTB minecraft world. I have no experience in this area, Ive only ever done gaming rigs, so i have no idea were to start. I would also like to use as a NAS as well, also no clue. My would like it to be very small, quiet and inexpensive. Ive heard that SSDs make minecraft chunks load fast. If that's true some kinda raid or cashing setup would be amazing. As for the NAS part of the build, it would be more less just for swapping files in between multiple computers. I'm not all that worried about losing data.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated. All hardware, software including an OS suggestions will help a lot. I really have only done gaming builds before, so I haven't got a clue.

Thanks.

Budget? Are hdds in the budget? If so, how much capacity? Peripherals?

well 500$ is the most id spend, but  think it can be done for alot less. Its really just a casual side project. 1tb would be more then enough space. Im not worried about any peripherals.

Why not just host the server and files off an existing system?

Btw, you have to quote someone's post otherwise they don't get a notification you responded to them.

intel has a nice mini itx server board very good.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121553

and get a very low end xeon like the

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115084

and put 8 gb off  ecc ram

get a nice rack mount case of a case with hotswap and a lot of fans

use the stock cooler and run all fans at max

and put linux on it

and run 2 500 gb drives in raid 1 for boot

and run a raid card in the pcie slot and 4 4tb drives for the nas part of the build.

plan on about 1000 dollars excluding the drives

You don't need a xeon or 'server components' just to run a minecraft server for only 10 people..

Well i tried using my laptop to do this but it pretty much had a nervous breakdown. cpu 100% fans maxed and a lot of overload errors. My main rig needs to be shutdown and that kinda defeats the purpose of a minecraft server.

Well now Im confused. my laptops has a

AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-74

4GB Ram

That looks very similar to your build. So shouldn't it work? I know my OS(vista) is half corrupt and swimming with all kinda of errors. Do you think a new SSD with linux would fix things? Maybe some kind of dual boot?

The cores of your notebook are much weaker than the ones in the G1610 but it doesn't take much to run a minecraft server/NAS anyway. You still might want to first try reinstalling an OS.

Yea but they are much more reliable are will last longer and are made to run 24/7. they really are not that more expensive either

Compared to a celeron, pentium, or cheap amd variant, yes they are. They also don't come with stock cooler so you have to buy your own >.>

Great if you need a cheaper powerful cpu,not so much for a minecraft server.

Take WM's build, Put the FTB Server jar (And other FTB Files) and such on the SSD,

Should be easy to take a basic guide to making a Linux Server and then just run a server on top.

OS, I'd recommend Debian.

Stuff I have I like: Moto G - Superlux HD681 Evo - Monoprice 9927

90% of what I say is sarcasm.

Hey dude you want my cowbox server? lol Intel Pentium 4 2.6GHz with 3GB of mixed ram with two sata ports and two ide ports? lol It would come with a usb mouse and a PS2 keyboard and a vga Dell monitor. lol Stock dell cooler and some random hard drives. Runs Ubuntu 10.04 server just fine, just don't go beyond that. lol

If you happen to have a slightly older PC, you could even salvage some components from that to make your build cheaper.

I agree.  A decent modern Pentium CPU is more than powerful enough.  Non-ECC RAM is fine in this situation because you won't be running any workloads that require that level of precision.

Well all i have is my main rig 3770k 7950 16gb ect. ect, but i dont want to use that.

Then i have my laptop(VISTA) AMD Turion X2 Dual-Core Mobile RM-74 4GB Ram 300GBHDD. I would like to use that but i keep getting server overload errors. Im thinking the hardwear should be enough, but for what ever reason it has *32 java and lots of other *32 programs that shouldnt be there. The windows installer/downloader is all kinda of currupted so i cant even fix it with out alot of work im not sure i want to even do.

Im thinking of just ripping out the HDD and installing a new 128GB SSD with a new copy of windows 7 or 8 (havent done any reasearch on 8 yet) Im thinking the new os would fix all those errors as well as free up alot of RAM, and well a SSD is a SSD! Im not 100% sure what do at at this point.

If you want to use a light operating system, especially for a server, use Ubuntu or Linux mint....

Would  it be possible have have both windows and Linux on the same drive, and have them boot individually depending on what i would want to use the laptop for? If so what would would be a good storage size assuming i would not install very much onto it?

get a high frequency CPU (java doesn't really use that many cores)

and get all the ram your budget can afford.

you can boot 2 OS's if you use a virtual machine, but virtual machines require a lot of pc horsepower.

Yes, you can. A 60-64GB drive would be enough. Linux is pretty small. If you take a look at smaller distros, you can find some as small as 50MB like 'Damn Small Linux.'

Speaking of which, it'd be fun to see a Damn Small Linus doing an unboxing.

He's not running them at the same time but instead having dual boot.

I would recommend this but with a 1tb hybrid drive instead of the ssd as your laptop is older im guessing wont have usb 3.0 so the speed of the internal drive will be better.

If you get a new system to use I would recommend getting an AMD APU from what ive seen at the very low end there better than the intel equivalent for price or try get somthing 2nd hand(im using a AMD Athlon II X2 3.1Ghz with 8 GB RAM for my nas it works great i also have over 10tb of hardrives in with windows 8 parity bit)
