290x is hot and power hungry, but it actually has 4gb of vram.

R9 290x is actually a little cooler than a GTX 980, so it's not that hot. (non reference card ofc) Plus, the extra power draw is minuscule on the electric bill. Unless the card is running 100% 24/7. Which for a gamer, is not quite the case.

Which is better performing?

At 1080p, they go back and forth, it's about the same with the 290x being a little better most of the time. It's also hotter and takes more power if you're okay with that

970. It's cooler, quieter, uses less power and has better performance. At medium quality you aren't going to be pushing the vram even if that were an issue (I haven't found it to be).

As does the 970. Shocker.

NO!! The 290x is way overpriced right now and the 970 will get you ~20 more fps in most games. I made a thread on this a while ago. The 290x would be a great choice if it were less money. I am not a Nvidia fanboy, I have a 290 in my system. I cringe everytime someone buys a 290x for $300. Ouch.

The 970 has always had 4GB vram. You're spreading misinformation.

only 3,5 is actually good though. and if it only had 3.5 it would be less of a problem. (I know it's not a big problem anymore because nvidia patched it up in their drivers)

*sigh* why do people bother with these threads 90% of the people asking here know what card there gonna getting. Why take advice from random people on the internet, instead of looking up benchmarks. Just saying I'm pretty sure if the r9 290x was better more people on pcparkpicker would be using it. The total the amount of r9 290x used in pcpartpicker completed builds are 210 and the total amounts of gtx 970 used is over 1700 and the gtx 970 has not een out for as long.

No. The card has 4GB vram, but it's split into two chunks where the 0.5 GB chunk runs slower than the 3.5GB chunk. The card has 4GB in total and all of it is useable.

At medium you won't even be using that much vram anyway, even if it were an issue and like I've already said, I haven't found it to be.
