Anti-Static Precautions

So, I'm soon to be building my PC and I've heard all about how you need to be safe when handling components so you don't shock them. I've looked around a lot and watched a few videos but couldn't find a definitive answer. If I want to discharge the static in my hand can I just touch the back metal part of the case?

I've also heard that when using the "touch the back of the case" method you have to plug in a PSU? Is that true?

Thanks for your help.

Yes plug in the psu and have it on the 0 position.

OK, but what should I do when moving the MOBO into the case (doing external build first)?

You don't need to plug the psu in. Just touching the case works because you'll be on the same electrical level (~something like that) as the case and components.

Wait, so who's right? Is it not necessary to plug PSU in?

My computer is not dead. And I didn't plug the psu in. I also built it on carpet. Several times. Touched the back of the motherboard. Rubbed my fingers on the back of the CPU. Etc.

So you could say that I'm not wrong. You don't need the psu plugged in.

the psu is connected to your house earth main, ground whatever. Plugging it in will make it 100% not, 99% the caps in the psu should hold whatever discharge you have with ease. Just touch the psu with a finger on the mb this will discharge everything and start building.

You can also just touch a wooden table.

So plug the PSU into the wall and touch MOBO with one hand and top of PSU with another?

You can also just touch a wooden table.

I'm building on an all wooden table with tile as floor.

yes, if you want to be super careful. Honestly i didnt do any of this. I just grounded myself with a pole i have in my garage. Unless you or working with something that can blow up,don't worry to much.

I built my case with no precautions. I just put my 750D on a wooden table and put all the parts in (PSU not plugged in). Then plugged it in and it worked.

The gimmicks of static-strap this static-strap that is useless IMHO. If you can build a PC without touching the metal parts of your computer case you deserve a medal. You're going to accidentally touch it eventually.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. You could fuck your pc on a shag carpet and not have to worry about ESD if you use your noggin.

To demonstrate, I will now build a PC case out of carpets.

cut stripes out and stick those on the fans so they swing trough the whole case

AlwaysFSX uses reverse static electricity discharge.

He takes the motherboard and rub it like crazy on carpet. Now the motherboard is statically charge. The result is that you won't break the motherboard by discharging yourself onto it, but rather, the motherboard will discharge itself on you. It is brilliant I tell you!...

Wait...

Just touch a metal water pipe that's goes underground.

But once you put the CPU in the motherboard, the chances of you frying something are pretty low.

And to make sure you don't generate static from your clothes, build your PC while naked.

Well if you have an AMD GPU like your R9 270x, we could probably cook meth off the back of the card.

Always work around metal. Touch it before you touch computer components.
