Soundcard for Gaming?
For strictly gaming, onboard sound has been getting better and better, and will most likely suit your uses just fine.
I don't understand people who seem to feel the need to buy high-end hardware when all they play is LoL/CS:GO/SC2/etc.
The only time I would recommend getting a separate audio solution is if you are experiencing buzzing or other types of interference in your audio that you want to get rid of. In that case, I would just get an external USB sound solution such as the Behringer UCA202. Not the most professional hardware, but it does the job by moving your hardware outside of the electrical interference inside your computer.
The only other reason that I would consider a soundcard is if I wanted to make use of certain proprietary surround sound software, such as Creative CMSS or Dolby Surround. I used to use a Creative Fatal1ty soundcard, and thought it was the shit back then, but when I moved to an external soundcard, amp, and a good pair of actual headphones, I no longer think it was worth it for the shoddy HRTF.
All in all, unless you have issues with your current audio, or you need to be driving high-end audiophile equipment that your onboard solution simply can't supply enough power to, I would say that most soundcards in PCI card form aren't useful/(aka is a scam).
