The GTX 770 is pretty much a rebadged GTX 680 with a few slight changes. It's a bit faster, and cheaper. So no point in thinking about the 680.

The 7950 is slightly slower than the GTX 770, so I would personally go with a GTX 770.

HD 7970, cheaper then the GTX 770 and it out performs it with a minor overclock and can come to within spitting distance of a 780 if overclocked to around 1175Mhz core

Not cheaper by much, and an OCed 770 would also come close to a 780. Stock the 7970 and GTX 680 were pretty much neck and neck, and with the 770 being slightly faster than the 680, it takes the cake when you're talking about running it stock. To get either card with a decent cooler to OC you're looking at about $400 unless there's a sale going on. At that point it would come down to what games you play, that's where one or the other can start to pull ahead.

Another thing you guys have to think about is OP might not want to overclock, some people just aren't up for it.

not like overclocking is hard to do nowadays, especially on a GPU where you don't even touch the BIOS, fire up afterburner and move the sliders up and then play a game and see if it crashes, rinse and repeat until it crashes then backstep once and you got a faster card for the same price you originally paid

770 is the same as a 680 but with higher frequency memory so 770>680. 680>7950. So it is pretty simple.

Get a 770.

No it's definitely a simple and safe thing to do as long as you read up on it first. But that doesn't change the fact that some people are still either afraid of damaging there cards or just don't want to spend all the extra time doing lots of stability testing.

I hear cuda cores are a little nicer for editing, but try and get a 4gb 770 then. It may not be able to make full use of the 4gb, but even if it uses 3gb then you still have the same vram as a 7970

Stuff:  i7 7700k @ (dat nibba succ) | ASRock Z170M OC Formula | G.Skill TridentZ 3600 c16 | EKWB 1080 @ 2100 mhz  |  Acer X34 Predator | R4 | EVGA 1000 P2 | 1080mm Radiator Custom Loop | HD800 + Audio-GD NFB-11 | 850 Evo 1TB | 840 Pro 256GB | 3TB WD Blue | 2TB Barracuda

+1 on 7970 because 2gb of vram is very borderline when you are maxing out settings and AA. I would recommend the MSI Twin Frozr 3 7970 or the HIS IceQ X2 7970.

Ah I totally missed that this is for an editing rig...

If you're using Premiere/AE cs5/5.5/6/CC you'll want to go Nvidia because they are the only cards fully supported at this moment by both programs. They plan on supporting AMD cards later down the road with CC but not right now.

Other NLE's are good with AMD cards, but really right now a GTX 770 is a good deal for $400. To get much better you'll have to step up to a 780 or a 7970 ghz edition and OC a bit.
