The 280x is significantly faster.

I've never owned an AMD GPU, so I can't really compare and contrast from experience.

Pretty much no difference to be honest. Gone are the days when AMD drivers were so bad you needed to mod them to get the working properly.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Depends on what you want.

280x: Higher TDP, more VRAM, faster memory bus, older architecture...

960: Low TDP, easy overclock to 1200-1300MHz, less VRAM, new architecture...

I was wondering which is better for 10800— the 280x or 960

both are close enough to be considered equal really. some will say get the 280x because more vram, others will say go 960 for lower heat and nvidia features. both are great cards and you can't go wrong with either one. if you go with the 280x i'd recommend going with sapphire, their coolers are awesome. if you go with the 960 i'd recommend EVGA for their awesome warranty and customer service, as well as their step up program.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

280x hands down.

Faster than the 960 and 1Gb more vram  ;)

4 GB 960 with an OC tho...

Not trying to start a flame war, but the cards are REALLY close...

That 128-bit bus though...

That color compression though...

Seriously the 960 is fine with a 128bit bus thanks to other tech

280X its basicly no brainer.

Its way better then the GTX960 in terms of performance.

And if you are going to wine about the GTX960 4GB,

They are so much more expensive then the 2GB version, that for that amount of money, you can also buy a R9-290.

Which blows it out of the water, its not even close.

GTX960 4GB is just a pointless card, that "to me" does not make any sense in the market.

That was before we had solid drivers for the 960. now with an OC, marks are about the same. Or so close, you can't tell.

That 128-bit bus though...

Its faster then using system memory, and the last 500Mb on the 970...

GTX960 4GB is totaly pointless.

You can grab a Sapphire 290 TriX OC for arround the same price, in terms of performance its not even close.

The 290 eats the 960 for breakfast.

Have solid driver, have OC, still can't beat the 280x.

You have to remember, one can OC the 280x easily.

That 128-bit bus though...

Maxwell uses a color compression technology that allowed Nvidia to double the number of ROPs per memory partition compared to Kepler, which allows it to use it's memory much more efficiently than it's low on-paper bandwidth suggests. A 128-bit bus on the GTX 960 matters less than it would have on older cards. And besides, the benchmarks already take that into account.
