GPU Thermal Compound

Go to solution Solved by ShadowCaptain,

I removed the cooler/fans shroud thing from my G1 GAMING GTX 980. I was wondering if it is alright to leave the thermal compound on until I can get to the store and buy some isopropyl alcohol. (At least a day's time) Also, just in case you haven't taken the cooler off of your video card before, unplugging the fan connectors is the single hardest thing in the history of the world. (without breaking them obviously)

Thanks guys!

wait why? was the card having issues?

if that a new card you realise removing the cooler voids your warranty right? (EDIT: I might be wrong about gigabyte card actually if so ignore this part)

Anyway, if you are not using the card, its fine to leave the paste on - but do not put it back together and use it with old paste in that state

I did this literally a few days ago :D check my build log :) http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/257759-first-build-project-yin-yang/?p=4924359

And for your question - if you don't re-connect back the cooler with the leftover paste, it should be fine, NEVER re-use the compound :)

Sure, but definitely make sure to disassemble it once again to remove the old paste and apply new stuff.

If you're leaving the cooler off and not using the card until it has some new, it should be perfectly ok to leave it on.

Perfect.

Obviously, no. I'll be putting on new compound before I put it back together. Also, I don't think it's possible to put thermal compound on worse than it came from Gigabyte, so they should make the warranty longer for changing it. :)

What about the thermal pads? Should I cover those with anything, or leave it out how it is?

Don't touch the thermal pads! Leave them as they are, no paste or anything

That sounds pretty complicated, but I think I might be able to do nothing.

just try to keep dust and moisture away

Is it machine washable, or hand wash only? :)
