If you're referring to broadwell you may be better to just go haswell, given what we know so far the CPU side may actually be worse given the significantly lower clock speed and reduced cache.

If you were thinking skylake that's second half of 2015

Sidenote the 5000 series I7 has some really stupid name ending in C

Broadwell would be 1151, right? Either way, it will probably still be DDR3 as broadwell will work with Z97.

No, Broadwell will be on LGA 1150 with the Z97 chipset, just like Haswell. Skylake will be on LGA 1151 with a new chipset.

X99 is Intel's enthusiast platform. It isn't Z97's sucessor. The 5770k will be a consumer CPU, meaning it will run on Z/H series motherboards. In response to OP, Z97 motherboards will be compatible with a bios update, just like Z87 with haswell.

+1

no you need X99 or something newer if they release it.

5770k is broadwell...

Lets all ripperoni in pepperoni

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Broadwell in my earlier post, lol.  That's probably because I strongly recommend anyone skip broadwell and wait for skylake since it is going to be released just a few months later.  Even Intel doesn't seem too interested in Broadwell.  I think they are only releasing 2 desktop CPU's or something, with only a miniscule difference between it and devil's canyon I don't see the point.

Do any of you know when the I7 5770k is going to be released? Cause Intel said it would be in the second quarter. I plan on buying it soon so that I can replace my 2500k. Also, will it be compatible with z87 or z97 mobos?

There is no 5770K, it's either Core i7 5775C or Core i5 5675C, both of them are unlocked to support overclocking and it runs on the current 1150 socket, but board must be a Intel 9 series based chipset like H97 or Z97. Skylake will have the K suffix for overclocking and that will run on a newer socket, 1151.
