He's going to need to replace half that computer to keep up with modern games long before he would need the i7. A better "long run" would actually being a chip that can overclock - because the overall speed/performance of that i7 will get in the way of performance long before games need all 8 threads.

No need to overclock yet. Tell him "in 4 years he can overclock". 

 

And when he needs to, just tell him to ask people on here :)

If the aim is gaming - overclocking the CPU is a waste of time, nerves and money. The max cpu you can possibly need for gaming is the cheapest haswell i5.

 

this build for example will cost the same, but will be lightyears more enjoyable... because i thought about the most important part everyone seems to forget - the monitor

ye, and you get a working freesync loop on a 75hz widescreen IPS = cant beat that for the price (well, you can take a 290 instead of a 290x)
