Help me (finally) build my first PC

Ryuk

Hey guys,

I was planning to build a PC last year but I ended up going with another laptop. I am quite happy with my G550JK but games do not run as smooth as I wish they would. I though it makes no sense to throw another 1+k for a "gaming" laptop so this summer I am finally doing it (yay!).

I will be using this for many things - gaming, using virtual machines, photo editing, etc.

Priorities:
1) Portability! I would like to fit the case in my backpack and be able to carry it.
2) Durability! I will be flying quite a lot so the parts should be durable.

3) Temperatures! I wouldn't want to see my CPU/GPU going too hot.

4) Noise! I would prefer it to be quiet, but a big of "RAWR!" is ok.

This is what I have come up with:
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mp74kL

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz: I know the i5 will do the job just fine but I don't mind spending extra $100 since I do need the power sometimes. I will not be overclocking at start, but I might consider it in the future.

CPU Cooler: Corsair H75 54.0 CFM: Seems like a decent and not too loud cooler. I just want it to be water cooled really, nothing more to it. I am wondering if I can fit in the case, however.
Motherboard: MSI Z97I AC: Again, seems like a nice mobo that offers overclocking. It has no M2 ports, which is a con, I would prefer it to have it. Maybe you can help me pick a better one.
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB: Corsair seems like a safe brand to go with. Don't tell me 8GB is enough because it is not. I do need the power.
Storage: WD seems like a decent choice, I also have a 250GB SSD laying around so I am planning to use that as well.
GPU: Asus GeForce GTX 970 mini: I know the case can fit a full size GPU but I might get a smaller case in the future so getting a smaller GPU seems like a good idea.

Case: Silverstone RVZ01B: I find this case "all right". Not very attractive, but not ugly like many other mini-itx cases. I actually prefer the ftz01, but it is quite a bit heavier and a big larger, so I guess no:(

PSU: Silverstone 500W 80+ Gold: I know nothing about power supplies, is this going to be enough?
Case fans: Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition: better cooling cannot be bad. right?

Monitor: Asus VN248H-P 23.8". I am not sure about screens. I am planning to travel so no idea how to do that. Should I get a smaller screen maybe? (like the acer 21"?) I am quite used to IPS panels and I don't think I want to go back.

Mouse: Will probably go with the ASUS ROG one. Currently using a SteelSeries Sensei (horrible materials, never SteelSeries again).

Keyboard: I might pair it with an ASUS ROG keyboard but I really like the CM QuickFire Si.

Any opinions/comments/suggestions on that? I have never build a computer from scratch (I did work with computers before, however). Really excited and cannot wait!

Thank you, guys, in advance :)

GL getting an AIO cooler in there xD The best cooler for you would be the Noctua NH-L. Also consider getting an i5 with lower TDP, the cooler wont be able to cool the CPU properly in such a tiny case. You will see high temps. Below is a list I've modified a bit:

If you're flying I'm not sure putting a water cooler in there is a smart idea.

Especially if you're putting the computer (and likely have to) into the belly of the plane.

Your case choice is quite large...

I'm not sure if you can actually fit an AIO in there look for a low profile air cooler like the Cryorig C1 or some of Noctuas offerings

other than that it looks pretty good, though i can agree with @blu4 and suggest an i5 as it produces less heat to begin with

Aftermarket 980Ti >= Fury X >= Reference 980Ti > Fury > 980 > 390X > 390 >= 970 380X > 380 >= 960 > 950 >= 370 > 750Ti = 360

All right, no AIO cooler, I am fine with Cryorig and Noctua offerings.

I would like to have the box on my carry-on so that it fits in my large backpack. Yes, it will be heavy, but I would rather have it next to me, i do not trust the staff with moving the luggage :).

Also, about the CPU - do I absolutely must go with i5 if I want to keep it relatively cool? I understand that it will generate less heat but how much less are we talking about?

What do you mean by large? I have been looking for cases for a long time and haven't found many small cases that can keep the CPU cool.

Do you know of other small cases that can fit the components (without the AIO) and fit in a large backpack? I would consider anything really.

(even though it will be in a backpack I will still take most of the components out, like the cooler, gpu to prevent damage).

Thank you guys for the input :)

The Silverstone SG13 might fit the bill.
