Switching SIM cards. Will it work?

I have a Windows HTC 8x and I want to get a Galaxy S5. If i just take the sim card out of the windows phone and put it in the galaxy, will it automatically work? Like will i be able to text, be hooked up to our data plan, have the same phone #, able to call, etc. Basically have it work like a normal phone would. Or would i have to get a new sim card and go to verizon?

Should just work. But I'd transfer contacts to the SIM from the windows phone, copy them over to the S5, back them up to Google's whatever service and then delete them from the SIM.

If the GS5 is carrier free then it will work fine. 

 

If it is locked to a certain carrier it will need unlocked.

As a fellow Verizon user, is it a full SIM? Because the SIM in my phone is just for 4G and nothing else. So it may not work on that principle alone...
