I'm researching a fairly cheap build with the view to a long upgrade path and would like some opinions please. The current budget is around £500. I already have an older but fair GPU and a decent PSU (both included for reference). Cooling is initially stock (see below).

CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£157.38 @ Scan.co.uk)
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110i GT 113.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler  (£100.94 @ Scan.co.uk)
Motherboard: Asus Z97-A/USB 3.1 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£135.56 @ Scan.co.uk)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance Pro 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory  (£63.36 @ Scan.co.uk)
Total: £552.88

This builds upgrade path over time would therefore be:

  1. M.2 drive
  2. NVIDIA card/s
  3. i7 (K)
  4. Adding Noctuas especially in push pull for the H110i
  5. More RAM

Of course I could wait for Broadwell or Skylake...

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.

cut back on the cooler since the locked CPU wont heat up that much

put more money for RAM

Get the I5 4590K.

An AMD cpu has no place in a solely gaming build, end of.

I3 4150, Intel HD graphics, corsair CX750M, 4gb ram, Asus H81M-E, corsair 230T, Intel stock cooler WD Green 2TB Gigabyte 550TI

Why you shouldn't trust Gpu or Cpu boss Click on this I dare you!

You don't need that insane cooler if you are getting a locked CPU. It would be fine on a stock cooler even, but If you wanted a chea air cooler go with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

I could certainly do that and go with something like an H80i. However the reason for that choice is based on the premise of upgrading the build to an unlocked i7 at a point in the future.

Presumably a saving in both cash and aggravation in the long run? Or would we say that an H110i may be overkill even for an OC i7 given the socket range?

Agreed.  Look for a similarly priced unlocked processor so you can overclock.  Otherwise the H110i is just plain overkill.

it will be better to run with the stock cooler now

then save up for the serious cooling when you get the i7 5xxxK Broadwell

and maybe it may be better idea to get a SSD of 120-128 GB range for fast booting

Storage won't be a problem as I already have options thanks.

I can't drop to a dual core sadly. The extra physical cores are required.

I'd drop the $100 cooler and get a Cooler Master 212 EVO or Kraken x31 if you really want water cooling. With the saving you could bump to a i5-4690k and overclock.

Are you just gaming? If so you'll get no difference in performance between an overclocked i5-4690k and i7-4790k in most cases.

You'd be pretty much set for processor at that point and could save your money for a better video card and SSD

No it won't be just gaming it will very likely be work as well.

I already have the storage covered so the only longevity upgrades would be those that I mentioned - GPU amongst them and sooner in the priority context.
