Why get a harddrive?

Go to solution Solved by crystal6tak,

Let's put it this way...

You can get a 5TB HDD for $139.99... That's $0.028 per GB

You can get a 1TB SSD for $299.99... That's $0.312 per GB

See the difference?

Hey everyone! As I was taking a long, hot shower and rethinking my life decisions, I realized... Why does anyone have harddrives? SSDs are faster, last longer, and quieter. So the only reason harddrive have an advantage is that it can hold more. But you can get larger/dual SSDs! Then after sitting there, thinking about this... I realized I actually have a 1TB as well as my 128 gig SSD. So why do people still use them? Cheaper? Or am I missing some amazing thing harddrives can do that solid state drives can't? Thanks everyone for reading! :P

P.S this took my like 10 minutes to type because I was distracted watching The Big Bang Theory xD

They are cheaper, most people that have a good build (Higher end) have SSDs for booting or even for storage, and they use the HDD if they don't because if it's things you don't need to boot fast then why spend the money on the faster bootup?

Because HDD still offers a better price pr. GB.

And if you only use a HDD for mass storage, then it doesn't really matter if you put it on a HDD or a SSD.

Some people have very large game libraries that don't really make a difference when running off an SSD, not to mention the cost savings since it's cost/GB is much lower than the regular SSD. I personally have a 128GB SSD and a 3TB HDD just for photo and video storage with my game library on it.

Well because you can get a 1TB HDD for 45$ and a 1TB SSD for 350$...

Because what everyone has said and because mechanical drives are still the industry standard and will be for a long time.

Not only that but when if you have a laptop unless it's fairly high-end and brand new it will have a HDD in it. Which at some point you will get sick of and want to upgrade to an SSD. Then your relatives will complain about the slowness of their laptops which you will again upgrade to SSDs. Naturally nobody wants all these HDDs so you end up with a stack of HDDs. We can talk about the $/GB bit with new HDDs vs new SSDs and that's definitely true... but you can't beat the $/GB of something that's effectively free....

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing

Oh, I don't know, maybe it has to do with the fact that if I wanted to kit out my file

server with SSDs, the amount of storage I currently have in there would have cost me

about nine times as much, specifically more than 11,000 bucks? :D

Yeah, that would be why. SSDs are still nine times as expensive here per gigabyte.
