hi guys i am looking for silent fan and i am wondering should i go with 4 pin 120mm or 3 pin 140mm. I suppose I could go with 140mm 4 pin but the brand i am choosing only do 4 pin 120mm.

Thank you!

4 Pin is PWM, which makes changing the RPM (Rotations Per Minute), more precisely changeable.

3 Pin is non-PWM, fan control is still possible, but really inaccurate.

Basic guide to CPU's!

How do you plan to control the fan?  If you want to do it from a motherboard header, make sure the header actually uses PWM.

For some reason many 4-pin motherboard headers use voltage control rather than PWM.  In that case there's little point in using a 4-pin fan.

The 3pin/4pin connector are just different ways for controlling the fan. If you would like a quiet fan, we might be able to give some suggestions if you explain what it would be used for, where you're shopping/located, and budget.

If you ever need help with a build, read the following before posting: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/3061-build-plan-thread-recommendations-please-read-before-posting/
