Compatability MB and CPU

Go to solution Solved by skullbringer,

physically yes, its the same socket. you may need to do a bios update though.

Hi, I'm just wondering if my motherboard is compatible with this cpu - intel core i7 4790k, i know the socket matches, but when i tried calling asus about the chipset the line kept getting f*ed up i don't know why, so will this work?

asus p9d ws

As long as it has the bios version 1804 or newer it'll work fine.

Real question is, why get a c226 board and a 4790k? If nothing else, get a 4790 (if it would even work) and save the ~30 bucks. Can't OC on c226, its a server board...

What is the purpose of the build?

testing, if i need to overclock then i'll get a new board, this is a first build and overclocking is risky for me, this is temporary i just need to know if it will work

Weird board to test with...... Are you getting it for cheap or something? OR you already have it and are buying the 4970k?

It should work imo, but I can't guarantee it. I am just trying to figure out exactly why you want that board lol

Yea, very weird board to test with.  Buy a Z97 motherboard, it should have plenty of features, and you don't have to overclock if you don't want to.

I'm also not convinced it will be compatible out of the box.  Yes, with a BIOS update, but in order to even update the BIOS, you need a Haswell CPU, which the i7-4790k is not.

To avoid potential hassles start with a Z97 motherboard from the start.

What?

There are so many Z97 motherboards to choose from.

Asus Z97-AR

Asus Z97-A

I mean there are countless, I'm just naming two that are reasonably priced and look similar to the one you selected.

Also, you need to be talking to Asus, not Intel.  It is a motherboard compatibility issue, not processor.

Yea, plus, don't HAVE to go Asus, I only run asus boards, but there are literally over 100 z97's I am sure to choose fun. Ok, maybe not 100, but a solid 50+....

I needed something workstation grade, and it doesn't matter because they answered my question

Why workstation grade?  Is there a specific feature that, that WS motherboard has that you absolutely have to have?

Yea, they answered your question--partially.  It is compatible, but only with a BIOS update.  Intel doesn't know if that motherboard comes with an updated BIOS to support Devil's Canyon.  Heck, Asus might not even know because this motherboard was made a year or more ago and has probably been sitting in a warehouse without an updated BIOS.

This is a high risk, high price purchase unless you absolutely need a certain feature on that motherboard.

They didn't fully answer your question.

You should care because there is a chance you end up with components that aren't compatible.

If there isn't a feature you need on that motherboard, buy a Z97 motherboard.  You are spending less, and getting the same performance without any potential problems.  Don't be stubborn, an "8 series" WS motherboard is not a smart buy when you have a devil's canyon processor and don't have a specific need for a WS grade mobo.  Motherboards are plenty reliable.  I have an AMD 939 motherboard still rocking to this day.  Most motherboards come with a 5 year warranty anyways, and will last longer than 5 years if taken care of properly.

there's only like a few WS grade motherboards under that name, I need/want workstation grade, AMD? Enough talking lol

Strange... they do work for sure. Not sure why Intel doesn't have it listed.
