So, I'm pretty well acquainted with Intel CPU levels, and what the k's and x's and 4000's mean. Could somebody explain to me the different types, levels, etc. Of AMD CPU's? (and APUs plz) nomenclature I mean. What the names tell you.

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

AMD's APU's are the Athlons / Axxx CPUs, whereas AMD's more high end CPUs dominate the FX lineup ranging from the FX6300-FX9590, Higher number = newer/better. Thats about what I know, I'm an Intel guy.

FX series:

Most of the time, the first number is the core amount (FX 4100 has 4 cores, FX 6300 has 6, FX 8350 has 8), the 9590 is an exception, that one has 8 cores (it's basically the 8350 IIRC, but with a higher clock)

Those are from the AM3+ series.

 

Now for AM3 CPU's: One funny thing, AM3 CPU's fit in AM3+ sockets/motherboards. That is why AM3+ is not AM4.

It's fairly simple, you have Athlon and Phenom CPU's. SO you have either one of those + X[nunber] (which represents the core count) + another number+letter (like 860K).

 

You also have FM2 CPU's, those are the APU's. Don't know much about those, so can't tell you much about it

AMD FX-XXXX

The first number determines the number of cores the CPU has. FX-4xxx, FX-6xxx, FX-8xxx

The second number determines the architecture, 1 means Bulldozer, 3 means Piledriver.

FX-41xx & FX-43xx, FX-61xx & FX-63xx, FX-81xx & FX-83xx

The last two numbers just determine the base clock. FX-8320 has a base clock of 3.5 GHz and the FX-8350 has a base clock of 4.0 GHz.

The FX-9370 and FX-9590 are exceptions, those are just binned and overclocked FX-8320 and FX-8350 respectively.

The APU's are the FM2 CPU's, like A10 something CPU's.

The Athlon CPU's are from AM3 and are very much 'regular' CPU's.

 

Modern Athlons are FM2 / FM2+ APUs with the integrated graphics disabled (as well as, confusingly, a couple low-end APUs on the AM1 platform, which is newer than the AM3+ platform because fuck logic).

AMD has two major sockets, AM3+ and FM2+ (I excluded AM1 because it's kinda in it's own league)

 

AM3+ is compatible with the current desktop FX processors, such as the FX 4XXX, FX 6XXX, FX 8XXX and FX 9XXX.

FM2+ is aimed at the APU market, compatible with the A10 7XXX and A8 7XXX CPUs. This also includes the AMD Athlon line, including the Athlon X4 760K and 860K. The Athlons are barely different to the APU's, except for the fact that the iGPU is disabled for binning purposes and makes more sense if you have a dedicated GPU.

2 also means Bulldozer. Eg. the FX-6200, which is essentially an overclocked FX-6100.
