Can I set up 2 ssds on raid 0 and then separate from that set up 6 drives in raid 1 on the same pc? Raid 0 would be for the os and the raid 1 for all my data.

Does it matter that some of the drives are 3tb x2, 2tb x1, 1tb x1, and 500gb x2?(maybe the data on the 2tb can be mirrored onto the 2x500gb and 1x1tb)

Is there a limit to the amount of drives I can use?

How would I set up a back up from the main os raid 0 drives to the raid 1 at, lets say, 12am every day?

On a side note- I expect the 2 500gb drives to fail any day now as they have lasted me from my very first pc in 07. Damn, WD makes products that last. My comp runs 24/7 nonstop.

Hardware RAID or software RAID? For hardware RAID, this depends on your controller,

for software RAID on the software. But there certainly are setups which would allow

you to do this.

Yes it does matter. But to figure out how to properly do that we'd need more

specific info on your setup. ZFS would be very well suited for your purposes.

But I'm not sure if you're capable/willing to run Linux or BSD.

On the Windows side of things I will let other people answer since I'm not really

up to date on that front (most complex thing I've done in Windows is make a software

RAID1).

On Linux/BSD: a cron job. I'm sure there's some similar schedular thing on Windows,

but I'll let somebody else answer that.

Hehe, I have four Samsung drives from the beginning of 2008 that are still running fine

(although I have relegated them to backup drives now). I've actually read several times

that the drives being on for 24/7 is less taxing on them than frequent on/off cycles,

although I have not found any hard statistical data to back that up.

It would be software RAID.

Windows 7

I am capable of running Linux, but i only use windows 7 as it has better support for many of the things i do.

Any recommendations for a windows based software?

Hm, can't claim to know too much about that; haven't done much on Windows in quite a few years.

Maybe look into FlexRAID or SnapRAID?

Storage spaces might be a good idea.

Also, about the SSDs in RAID0, just get a single big SSD. I'm running two Kingston SSDs in RAID0 and to be honest, you don't get much benefit out of doing it.

EDIT: whoops, just remembered that storage spaces is only on Windows 8. Check out the FlexRAID tutorial @looney made
