Is the cost of the 980 justified or would sli 970s be better?

SLI 970 is much better.

+1 for SLI 970... It's pretty close in performance for much less cash...

If it was a choice of 980 to TitanX I would say TitanX as it's so much more powerful (As an example of power to performance and SLI vs single)

I don'T PreSS caPs.. I juST Hit THe keYboARd so HarD iT CriTs :P

whats your opinion?

SLI can have better performance than a single card that's around the same price point. However, it's dependent on the game at hand... some games might not make use of your second card very well and you'll be stuck on the performance of one. There's also the chance of stuttering with some less optimized games and other performance issues... but on the flip side, some games you'll destroy. I'd say it's pretty safe for major game releases, but there may be some indie games that won't like SLI very much. :P

Then there's the upgrade factor. When you'd like to upgrade, instead of just buying a second 980 and running those in SLI, you'll have to sell your current two 970s and invest a little money into the new card(s) you may want. If that's not a big deal, then I'd say go for SLI; you will get more performance for your buck in most games. In addition, DX12 will be making SLI even better (and allowing developers to make use of both card's vram) so make sure to take that into consideration as well.
