So i ended up buying a white power supply (pc power&cooling silencer mkiii 1200w) because it was on sale for a great price. sine then i have decided i wanted to do a black and white themed build. I ust ordered the z87 mpower and will be using the 780 lightning when it is available to purchase. but while i wait i decided to photoshop the board to see what it would look like with white accents instead of yellow, here are the results. before and after. the shop is crude but i think it works well enough to get the idea across. let me know what you guys think, good or bad idea? also how long should i wait before i paint the board, i want to make sure that it is operational before i paint it because from what i heard painting aboard voids warranties. I think the painting of the chipset accent will be the easiest as you can just un screw it, the yellow window i can paint and put back and i have a friend who does very fine airbrushing, he does car pinstripes but i should be able to have him hit the VRM heat sink and the audio boost letters, using some tape and patience i think this could come out quite well.

That looks pretty nice but I thought you made the whole board white, that could be quite something.

I wanted to do the same with my z77 mpower. Since it's such a small stripe, it (for me) would be a pain in the ass to paint properly.

However in the z87 mpower I think you can take the yellow part off and just spray paint it without having to cover up everything

i think that just a little accent of colour is really nice, all black & white is really really.. flat, ara you not gonna have a single coloured stuff in your case to match it?

well in this case no matter what colour you choose for your motherboard, the lights will cover it anyway, probably white is a better choice because it cause less colour distortion

First of all this should be in moddiing section of the forum where this type of expert advice is and yes there could be warranty issues

I had a question regarding taking off the heat sinks, once i take them off to paint them, do i have to change the thermal pads or whatever, thats what they look like for the VRM heatsink. ill post some pictures.
MSI_Z87_MPOWER_MAX_59-635x423.jpg

this one looks like its just a bit of thermal paste.

But under this heat sink there looks like some kind of thermal pad, would i have to buy more of that? it also looks like the stuff they put on GPU's when installing a water block. same thing? i think it would be safer to take the heatsink off then to try and airbrush it attached.

keep in mind dude that the line separating the audio hardware from the rest of the board lights up yellow when turned on

edit: as does the MSI logo on the southbridge (although you may be able to change that)

  • 1 month later...

Please post a pic when you're done, I want to see if I could do this too. I'm thinking of copper colored heatsinks.
