one of these what wattage things again

prepre73

Heres my build

CPU: FX-6300 Black Edition https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-338-AM

MB: MSI 970 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-286-MS

GPU: R9 280 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-251-MS

Ram: 8gb 2x4gb 1866mhz or 2133mhz(if possible) https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-175-KS

HDD: 500gb WD Blue

Case: NZXT Source 340 Red https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-161-NX

Cooler Master say I need 430w PSU, I have a 430w bronze PSU from Be Quiet already that was bought about a year ago and never used.

Is this cutting it to fine considering Linus said they over egg things on PSU calculators anyways. Would hate too buy a new PSU if I can help it, could try and sell it on ebay but thats a hassle tbh :)

Does your current PSU have enough PCI-E connectors for your 280? To be honest, if it were me, I'd feel more comfortable with a solid 500w PSU at the minimum.

Just checked and it does I have both an 8 pin and a 6 pin that my GPU needs. My PSU is semi modular and is fairly new, if I have to upgrade I will but was hoping I could get a way with not if possible

I might have to drop down my GPU to say a 970 to factor a quality PSU into my build but then that would be more power efficient anyways so :/

It's tough to say, you may be alright, but under full loads from that GPU and that CPU you may encounter some issues.

Based on your links, I'm assuming you're in the UK?

I'm assuming you mean a GTX-960. The 970 is far superior to the R9-280. And costs a lot more as well. I'd swap for a GTX-960 and give your current PSU a go. The extra efficiency should put you back in the green.

I am and thanks I was planning to go with a pentium AE used in the Linus TT budget gaming system but after their recent video it seems new game really can leverage more than 2 cores and I'm only  shooting myself in the foot when this becomes more of an issue in the future right

I'd go with an i3, much better per-thread performance over the FX-6300.

And the Red Team is usually the way to go, but if you're running that PSU, you may need to switch over.

Also faster clocked RAM wont do much, look for low latency instead.

Here's a decent alternative to your build, using your Power Supply:

Motherboard: ASRock H97 PERFORMANCE ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  (£85.16 @ Scan.co.uk)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 960 2GB Video Card  (£164.35 @ Scan.co.uk)
Case: Corsair SPEC-01 RED ATX Mid Tower Case  (£37.99 @ Amazon UK)
Case Fan: Corsair SP120 57.2 CFM 120mm  Fans  (£14.99 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £479.46
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Nice red-themed budget build that will get the job done. It's also very power efficient. The i3 is a dual core, but it has hyperthreading for a total of four threads. Each thread being at least 50% stronger than the FX-6300's threads. As for the fans, that pack is a twin pack. Slap one of them in the front as an intake with the stock fan, and slap the other in the rear as an exhaust.
