Hey all,

I stumbled upon these the other day while looking for low power consumption computer parts:

Anyways, my father has been a software engineer at various companies all over the US and he's been using the same old laptop to do all of his work. For his upcoming birthday I was looking into building him a new computer. He is huge on ECO stuff. He's always buying something to help him save the earth in one way or another either by buying things using recycled materials or by buying energy efficient electronics for the house. So I started looking around for low power consumption computer parts and realized that there aren't really too many options for this.

I like the ECO motherboards by MSI because they could be paired with the S versions of intels core processors to save some energy. I also found that kingston sells their lovo line of memory which was used with the MSI boards to get less power consumption than a standard 15v light bulb:

Sounds a little gimicky but I would love to hear about any other low consumption options for a pc including coolers (if they use less than the stock cooler) PSUs (not sure if this is a thing) and any other parts. Im hoping to get a build planned before the end of may for my fathers birthday.

Also anyone know any cases made from recycled plastics or other cases? I know he would love that too.

Thanks all

A downside I just realized to the NUC's is disk space. I don't have an incredibly large budget for this computer and my father would need a more space than a small SSD. Maybe I could buy him an external drive to go along with it as well but I would like to build one with a larger (1-3TB) hard drive inside.

NUCS can display multiple 1080p monitors I just used one of the new ones, it has 2 mini-displayports on it and has room for a 2.5 inch drive, which you can find a large drive in that size for a not terrible price, just know that internally it uses 2 m.2 slots one for a drive and one for wifi, although the i5 variants have wifi built in

Depends on how the NUC model TBH. At my work we have NUCs with 2x display ports that support 1440p and have got a space for 2.5' HDD. Very small and consume so little it's hard to believe!
