For 1080p just get a single 970. SLI 980's is, in my opinion, only a viable option for completely maxed out AAA titles at 1440p or high settings AAA titles at 4k. They're not a great value though.

We all know the 270x isn't a 1440p card.

However the 970 is. Op, I'd suggest a 970 or 290X if your parents are willing to. The rest of this build is pretty great, you can use it as a guide point :)

And where is his 1440p monitor going to materialize from?

You should ask him. He said he'll be gaming at 1440p. Either he has one already or he's buying one. If he can "go all out" for a $2000, he can go for $1200-$1300 for the build with the monitor included. If not I'd still get a 280/280x for 1080p. The 270x is a descend card, however in newer titles it isn't doing that good.

If OP can afford something better, why not get it?

(I think he's just being very optimistic about what his Mom meant by "shape up in school and I'll buy you a computer")

For 1440p a 270x certainly won't cut it,  A 280x or 290 would be serviceable though for med-high.
