Why is the iPhone so much thicker than the iPod touch when the only extra thing it does is calling which is just software. just curious

The calling feature is not just software. You are completely wrong about that. Also which iPhone and iPod are you comparing?

Cellular network connectivity requires extra antennas and other equipment. The iPhone also is not just different in software, it's quite a bit more powerful on the hardware side.

Finger print sensor, better camera(larger space needed for optics), antennas. Bigger battery?

The calling functionality is not just software. An iPhone has cellular antennas and the latest iPhone is more powerful than the latest iPod touch.

wow, i never knew there was such a dif. my dad has an iphone 4s and i have some new thin ipod...not sure what gen. prob 5 i think. i never noticed diffs, but then again im no expert. lol

Even if the device isn't more powerful, you still have to factor in the cellular antennas.

Well also considering that the iPod Touch hasn't been updated in over a year now. 

 

But generally the iPhone is more powerful than the iPod Touch.

I don't think the iPod Touch is on Apple's priority list.
