Replacing current cpu

Go to solution Solved by skullbringer,

Should work fine right out of the box.

Also you might get a few degrees lower temps with an aftermarket tim compared to the pre-applied stuff.

Hey! hope you all are doing well  :D.

Few months ago I made a post about whether to get an i5-4690k or an E3-1231v3 ( thanks for all your inputs ), hopefully tomorrow ill get the e3 delivered. I've built pcs but i've never upgraded/changed the cpu in an "already in use" mobo. Is there something I should be worried about aside from zapping the mobo? will i have to do a cmos reset? or will the motherboard recognize it right away? should I remove the pre-applied tim and use artic?

This is my current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/GFWbf7

I converted from a 4690k to an E3-1276v3. All I had to do was update to a bios version that supported the xeon, and that's it. Windows worked as normal and only required a single restart from the first boot.

Thanks for your input. May i ask why did you have to update your bios? thought 97 chipset supported refresh out of the box ( in your signature it says Z97-K )

How to remove it from the heatsink? should i use a butter knife and scrape it off?

I wasn't sure if the BIOS version that my motherboard came with supported the xeon, (It likely did). So just to be safe I updated before changing any hardware.  :)

Makes sense, i am afraid there might be a power surge while i update my bios or something crazy like that and end up bricking my mobo. How's ur xeon treating you? i am pretty hyped for mine.

It's awesome, I definitely noticed higher FPS in games like Arma, but on the whole it wasn't really a huge upgrade over the 4690k, should last me longer into the future though!

Ah, the extra two cores should help out quite a bit then.

Good luck!  :D
