Weekly photo challenge

Momas

I love "Rate the Photo Above you" (http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/17966-rate-the-photo-above-you/). What do you think about having weekly (maybe more time than a week?) themed photo challenges? I think it could be quite fun and educational at the same time (especially for noobs, like myself). At the end of each week we could choose/vote the best picture. What do you think about this? Would you participate in this kind of thing?

P.S. Sorry for my bad english :/

I think it'd be cool, but I'm not sure if many people would participate after the first few weeks.

Couldn't enter every week since I don't have the time to be running around getting pictures, but I'd enter on occasion.

i recommend a 2 week challenge, so more participants can get on for each challenge, you also need a judge panel of some sort, and a person who sets rules and the challenge

I would definitely be for this, would give me some incentives to actually do some photography work!

I think this is a great idea! I know some photo websites have:

1. Weekly challenges

2. 14 day challenges

3. Monthly challenges

Weekly challenges may be a bit tough to contribute regularly. Monthly challenges are easier to join but there are alot of photos to judge at the end of the month.

Would the voting be open to everyone, or would there be a judging panel or person?

Thanks for your responses, 2 weeks for entering looks like the best option, more time for people to enter but not too long either(month in my opinion would be too long).

About the selecting the best picture: I think it should be vote based, not judged by a judge panel, then everyone can enter. If it would be judged by a judge panel the ones who are in it couldn't enter the challenge themselves (if they would a lot of people could be upset that they might be extremely biased). Also choosing the best looking picture is kind of subjective anyways. If this way doesn't work out we could also change it, but I see this as the best option (feel free to argue with my opinion though)

Basic rules I though of:
1. Only photos YOU shot
2. Only light editing in software (color grading, cropping, rotating)
3. Just one photo per challenge can enter (you can post more, but mention which one should be judged/voted for. Not 100% sure about this rule though, it would be more fair for people who don't have much time to take a lot of photos it also would add a level of difficulty - choosing your best shot might not always be easy.)
4. Photo must be related to theme

Themes/challenges: Could be suggested by those who participate in the challenge below their photo. Who would decide what's the next theme? The person who won the last challenge would choose the next theme/challenge.

To start this of post your suggested themes. Themes/challenges should be doable without very expensive equipment (so that more people could join in)

My suggested theme would be: Rain (if there's no rain, create your own rain!)

Once everything is decided fully to start I'll create another post that's "clean", first challenge should start on friday or a little earlier.

So right now feel free to argue with me about the rules etc.  :)

I'm down for this. It'll help me find the limits of mobile photography. Can you use filters or not? As on both by phone and camera I have selective colour software filters for example that I might want to use.

Also, a theme I would like to put forward is streets.

I would consider this as heavier editing, but this might work as a separate challenge, for example: Selective color streets

What does everyone else think? Would this be considered heavy editing?

Yeah I think we should avoid filters

This is a photography challenge, not a photoshop one, editing should be related to exposure correction, rotating and cropping

I reckon it would be worth doing maybe a challenge involving it at some point, but for now it's fine to avoid then

so say i used lightroom, to brighten and lower the highlights of the photos so that the photo doesn't seem so washed out, would u see that as okay?

I agree, I'd avoid filters unless the challenge asks for it.

i like this idea, altough a 2 week or once a month option would suit better for me, altough the amount of content might get a bit to high.

one question though, since we are already on the filter part, how about infront filters, like polarizer's?

I support the part of photoshop only being used for cropping, exposure and rotation, otherwise photoshop is able to alter the whole picture to something diffrent.

May the light have your back and your ISO low.

Some people(probably most) will be using phones or cameras without things like polarizer filters, so using filters might seem like giving a disadvantage to some people (in some ways it actually could be). What do you think about limiting accessories to tripods(if you don't have one you can still improvise), flashes(pretty much everything has one integrated). This would give the most equal chances (at least equipment wise). Do others agree with this or not?

I don't mind people using polarising filters if they have them, as its not a post process filter which we've ruled out. However I do think accessories should be limited to polarising filters, tripods and flash, unless a valid reason can be provided.

I would include (variable) ND filters for long exposure shots.

i mostly use a polarizer against light(window's) reflections, depending on the topic it might or might not be needed.

altough i guess it would be the best for certain rules to be in use only when needed.

Ok, what I decided is you can only use these accessories: tripods, nd filters, polarizers, flashes.

Along the way we could have challenges that have extra restrictions or allow more equipment.

Tomorrow at around the same time as this post, I'll make a new topic, "14 day photo challenge", with the first challenge.

I decided on 14 days, because it seems like a good balance. If you have any more suggestions or questions please post them here till tomorrow  :)
