So, yeah, that my question, is over clocking really worth it? Like the pros and cons, does it decrease hardware lifespan, etc?

Also, how hard/easy to stuff up is it? I mean i'm sure their guides, but is it worth it?

I would love to hear your guys comments.

Thanks,

it doesn't decrease lifespan if you keep it properly cooled.

It's easy, and free performance.

Yes, to squeeze more performance. But it has cons like decreased lifespan (if like overvolted pretty high), overheating, dead parts, etc. just be careful, don't be crazy when overclock. Slow but sure.

It 100% worth it on server or computation machines, on some workstations.

I can say, that every 100mhz on my server machine adds me a lot of boost.

But, for the home\gaming pc there's not so much difference, still u will shorten the cpu's lifespan with OC.

as said above as long as temps are good its a free performance boost. yes and no for life span. if we knew how long each  cpu would last it would be a lot easier but, we don't, so as long as you don't over volt it should be good  you will get a new cpu before that one dies most likely. it should still last 3-5 years even oc'ed .  heat is the killer here not mhz or ghz. its really easy to do and its fun in a way, i highly suggest it even it you don't keep it oc'ed, it good to learn.

This really depends on the application.

For gaming, overclocking a modern quad core CPU hardly yields any benefit.  There's benefit to overclocking a dual core (G3258), but higher clocked two cores =/= quad core.

In the case of graphics card overclocking; you should do it for reasons mentioned in earlier posts.

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow; Motherboard: MSI ZZ490 Gaming Edge; CPU: i7 10700K @ 5.1GHz; Cooler: Noctua NHD15S Chromax; RAM: Corsair LPX DDR4 32GB 3200MHz; Graphics Card: Asus RTX 3080 TUF; Power: EVGA SuperNova 750G2; Storage: 2 x Seagate Barracuda 1TB; Crucial M500 240GB & MX100 512GB; Keyboard: Logitech G710+; Mouse: Logitech G502; Headphones / Amp: HiFiMan Sundara Mayflower Objective 2; Monitor: Asus VG27AQ

Definitely worth it. The benefits really outweigh any disadvantages in  most applications

Case: Phanteks Evolve X with ITX mount  cpu: Ryzen 3900X 4.35ghz all cores Motherboard: MSI X570 Unify gpu: EVGA 1070 SC  psu: Phanteks revolt x 1200W Memory: 64GB Kingston Hyper X oc'd to 3600mhz ssd: Sabrent Rocket 4.0 1TB ITX System CPU: 4670k  Motherboard: some cheap asus h87 Ram: 16gb corsair vengeance 1600mhz

Ahh cool thanks, this will definitely help when I do my next big upgrade (gonna get a k cpu and probably a high end air or aio water cooler, speaking of that, which yields lower temps for oc-ing?

High end air coolers can perform on par and even best some AIOs. They have less points of failure and are generally quieter too.

There's no harm in overclocking your system unless you do something very wrong, so I say go for it.

It 100% worth it on server or computation machines, on some workstations.

I can say, that every 100mhz on my server machine adds me a lot of boost.

But, for the home\gaming pc there's not so much difference, still u will shorten the cpu's lifespan with OC.

That is an absolutely backwards statement.

First, a 100 MHz overclock is only 3% faster, in most tasks servers do you will not notice any performance difference.

Second, servers are meant to have rock solid reliability and you say an over clock will shorten the lifespan of the system, why would you overclock your server then?

Third, you will notice a difference with gaming when you overclock your cpu because your minimum frame rates will improve along with general performance.

Always trying to find reason.

That's like saying you should tune a truck to get an extra half a horse power but by the end of the first trip you'll have to replace the engine.

OC'ing, in my experience, is just one of those things, sometimes you get good parts that can be pushed to billio and you notice the results, other times you get rubbish that can barely be pushed at all.  I never by a part relying on a possible over clock for performance, in fact in my last build I haven't even bothered oc'ing at all.

I remember a while back having an athlon xp1800, the multiplier on my mother board was locked by I still managed to get the FSB high enough to get another 1/4 out of it.  But even then I didn't notice the difference.

Just make sure you find some good guides online and study the do's and donts first (like keeping voltages within the dies tolerance).

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Like 2-3 fps.

If you done it right you can get a lot of boost.
