My friend has a laptop with 4gb of RAM, 2x2gb sticks. I found one of my old laptops which has 2x512mb sticks. Is it possible for me to put the old RAM in my friend's laptop? The sticks are the same size and his laptop has 2 empty slots.

Make sure that:

It's the same DDR series. DDR2 can't be mixed with DDR3.

The ram timings should be the same to assure it too work, and the latency normally too.

Basic guide to CPU's!

If I said I were 14, you would call me a kid. If I say 70, you’ll entitle me too old. If I say 20 you say I’m inexperienced and if I say 40 than I'm too boring.

Firstly, is your friends laptop running 64-bit OS? If it isn't then you will get no benefit from the extra ram.

Secondly, The actual size of the ram stick is not a good indicator, you need to make sure that the notch in the bottom is in the same place.

Thirdly, providing that neither of the previous options counted you out then you need to check the ram speed as if you install slower ram, the laptop will slow down your newer ram to the same speed (I think)

His laptop is 64 bit I think, I'll check now.

EDIT: His laptop is 64bit and ddr3, I'll check the old one now.

i have different ram timings and latency on my ram and i havent had a problem yet

It can work, or maybe it doesn't. But taking chances with something as fragile as a laptop is not too good.
