So ive been with my isp for almost 2 years. and ive had their 6 meg down no cap service. I called about a week ago and asked to bump up to the new service in my area. 15 meg down no caps. They told me it would take till the 13th of this month for my new speed to come into effect. I just want to know. WHY? Is it really more complicated than flipping a switch and giving me access to faster speed? I assume they send everyone the same service and just throttle based on what you pay for right? The cables already go to my house, i already have the shiny new fancy box at my feet right now. I dont understand why it takes so long to get my speed boosted from 6 to 15? Can someone explain to an idiot like me, because i obviously dont understand how this works.

Pretty sure its a hardwired throttle, not synthetic throttle since that would be easy to bypass by just not going through the ISP servers or using a VPN

From my experience, the ISP actually changes stuff in the phone line connection between my house and the street every time I want a change of bandwidth

pretty sure not all ISPs do the same, but thats how they do it here in canada

It's not hardwired throttle, you've no idea what you're talking about and I'm pretty sure you've no experience whatsoever in this domain.

Do you have ANY IDEA what you're saying? No.

It's almost weekend. Nobody work on saturday or sunday at those services?

Nope they are shut down on weekends. No tech support either i think. Could be wrong though. I just really dont get why i have to wait almost half a damn month to get my speed boosted. Im sure if they really wanted to it would take an hour tops.

yeah its not all controlled for the IPS servers

you can actually hardcode a device using firmware to have restrictions, such as speed and data caps

do you know what "firmware" is?

As for the OP it seems a bit strange to me why they would take until the 13th, maybe because your monthly bill or cycle rolls over then? But here (Canada) they can usually just switch you over no problem unless for lines >50Mb/s where they require a hardware upgrade to a new modem for higher speeds usually.

@DemiLovato suggest you to read the forum's COC, and there are some places that do use hardware limiting.

Aren't you the angsty little one. Please elaborate on your years of experience in the ISP industry using a variety of technologies and why he is 100% sure to be wrong.

For me to get an upgrade in speed, I had to have a technician out, add a new master filter and verify my home wiring was adequate. Took a couple days for the dispatch. This was due to the technology change (ADSL2+ to VDSL2).

OP, without knowing what kind of service you have, what the faster speeds require etc, it's hard to say. It could be a physical infrastructure improvement, it could be a configuration change needed to be done by a particular person who is currently on leave, could be DSLAM related and they'd rather wait til Monday to do it.

Is there any reason why you didn't ask, or they didn't give an answer as to what the delay was?

My network speeds are supposed to be 5mb/s down, .7mb/s up. They usually arent even 1/10 of that. HOWEVER, if we bug the ISP, they reset something, and then it works. For a day. We have centurylink, where "It takes a Century to load a Link"

it's impossible unless they break into your house or something they can only change software

Usually the person picking up your call will not be the person that "changes" your internet speed. They will have to forward your request to the backend to do so. By forwarding, it could be email or even their own in-house systems. After which, I assume someone (mainly technician) will change your internet speed (don't ask me how they change I'm also not sure).

Assuming that you are not their only customer, I assume it might take awhile for them to do so. Plus, if its over the weekend, then you might have to wait longer.

My service is only off by 1 mbps down. (i get 5.02 while paying for 6) which is typical. You can make formal complaints if you dont get what you pay for, even half of your payed for speed isnt good enough, they charge you to provide a set speed, and they need to meet it. (within reason like stated above, no more than 1mbps off)

So if I'm a tech who needs to replace the filter in your ETP, I need to break into your house? lol...

You're completely wrong, sorry. You don't pay for a set speed, you pay for access. There is no SLA that has to be met by your ISP (except federal regulations) because simply you're not worth it, and you're not purchasing an SLA.

Basically, if your bill isn't at least a thousand dollars per month, don't have such high expectations.\

Besides, why are you complaining to an internet forum about your ISPs service delivery, go complain to your ISP.

yes they do or you've to set up an appointment

If it's a physical filter they are replacing depending where you live it can be different, some are inside the home or apartment's electrical/wiring room, where they require access. From most that's I've seen and in my area at least there is the cable companies lock box outside the home on the incoming connection where they usually place the filter, or inside a main distribution box somewhere on the street or pole in some older neighborhoods.
