i7 + HDD or i5 + SSD

Hey, so I have the choice of a 4790 or a 4670k as a processor. What would be better? A i7 with a HDD which I could add a ssd down the line? Or save my money all together and just go with the i5 option?

WHat are you planning on doing with the system? You may not need the i7

If you get an i7 get the unlocked version. Otherwise just go for a xeon 1231 v3 and an ssd.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please聽馃え

What will you do with the PC? You can get the Xeon E3-1231 V3 like the others said and get an SSD. It has the price of an i5 but has Hyper-Threading which helps a lot.

The Xeon E3-1231 V3 is also good for gaming, but it's locked.

i5 + ssd all the way. Or Xeon E3-1231 V3 if you have a dedicated graphics card and dont plan to overclock.

Everything depends on what you are using the computer for.

So please tell us, what do you plan on doing with the computer?

Would skyping, while gaming, while watching videos/searching the web be considered extreme? Or is it jut mediocre multi-tasking? I don't do video editing btw.

In that case you only need an i5 processor.

i5-4690k

the 4670k is the older version, so make sure to get the 4690k.

Get the i7 4790k. Or, if u live closeish to a micro center, the 5820k. Here's the best rule for everything... get the absolute best you can afford. In this situation, the only reason to get the i5 is if the extra money lets you get a better gpu. SSDs are great for load and boot time, but wont give you added performance in gaming, skyping, or web browsing. Watch the linus tech tips video about the necessity of 4,6,8 cores and multitasking.

Great video for comparison.

In the video it looks like the 4690k is struggling, and well... it is. but they are testing some extremely stressful programs. I would personally never consider rendering while doing other processes. Rendering is for when you are taking a break from gaming/streaming imo. So to run it all at the same time... is kinda ridiculous. xD

With that being said, it's good to see what can actually perform.

I still think the i5-4690k will be more than enough for what you are describing as your usage.

i5 and SSD. You will be happy.

what about the 4790 + an SSHD (hybrid drive) then you get the best of both worlds.

everyone keeps saying i5 but if you intend to multi task and do work appications and games then the 4790 should be a good option as its stock is 3.6 and turbo boosts to 4gig. so unless you like to do mega overclocking as a hobby then ask yourself is this enough?? if you like to play around with settings and stuff then get a K series i5 or i7.

got to love Asus components
