Thank you very much. Appreciate your help. Yeah i really hope the other stuff is fine. A new mainboard and a new CPU would be ok in my budget. Although it's never funny to blow money into stuff that is equal to the current system or even inferior just because i'm stupid and used that damn easy tune :(. but if i had to get new ram, PSU or even VGA i'd be really pissed :( how can i best test the PSU without blowing up another system?

If you hook the PSU up to another system for a quick test I doubt it'll hurt anything if its bad. Just hook it up and get into the BIOS, look at the voltage readouts there for a good accurate measurement of each line. If everything looks normal (small fluctuations are fine) then you should be okay.

I doubt your PSU is damaged, but best to be sure.

I mean a 3rd gen and 4th gen i5 is only a 6% difference in performance, so it doesn't really matter what you get imo

ok. do you think it matters  if i get current gen (haswell and stuff) or wait for skylake in august? well sure i coudln't really game til then except on crappy consoles and that's quite horrible thought. Or should i maybe even go for AMD? thing is i don't know anything about AMD

Nooo nononono. Avoid AMD, they are not a great choice anymore. You would be fine with a current gen Haswell. Either the i5 4690k or the i7 4790k would work perfectly fine for you.

If you've got the patience for it I think Skylake is worth the wait but so far its hard to tell.

You could just get a used i5 for less than $150 ,and then resell it if Skylake is appealing to you when they are released. It wouldn't be worth the money to get a completely new socket and CPU from AMD when we will be seeing Zen processors in 2016 and skylake in August as @ApolloX75 pointed out.

 junker build in the making

What do you guys think of this: z97 MSI mpower mainboard (visually it would fit PERFECTLY in my build) + i5 4690k?

if you can smell your m/board of a burning electric type smell then you could have damaged it, blown some caps or something, so without a new cpu to check it its like hmmmm, do you try to find a cheap used / reconditioned 1155 cpu and hope it works or just have the pain of doing a full reinstall and upgrading now to a 1150 rig that should last a few years yet.

I am sure if you look hard enough there could be a used cheap cpu out there on ebay or something, it all depends on the rest of your rig, if the memory and hard drive interfaces are old, then i would try to replace the cpu, if the memory and hard drives etc are newish and the latest fast interfaces it might be worth getting a new board and cpu now and then you would have a good rig for a long time.

got to love Asus components

yeah thanks. i know it kinda sucks :( i pretty much decided to go for a new mainboard aswell. question is just do you think something else could have taken damage? RAM? or even worse maybe GPU?

Probably not. Test them in another setup if you can (I believe you said your brother has a system right?) that way you can confirm.

Nah just found it i can't... cause he has some prebuilt crap aswell he used to have a PC a friend of his built for him. Maybe he has some spare hardware parts but i doubt he has socket 1155.

Well damn.

I say go with the 4690K and that MSI Z97 board. Throw it together, cross your fingers and hit the switch. I doubt your overclocking misadventure would have damaged anything beyond the CPU socket, especially since the system still turns on, just can't post without a working CPU.

You do have to remember, Skylake might be coming August, but those are not desktop versions or oc versions. We have yet to have Broadwell desktop cpus.

And Broadwell isn't a huge improvement over Devil's Canyon. And yeah, Skylake may or may not drop in full in August. You're correct, we may not see full fledged desktop SKUs til Q4 2015 or even early 2016. It's all too difficult to predict.

Hence why it's probably best to jump on the Haswell boat and have fun.

I tried to. Well atleast the only way i know how. Push reset cmos button and take out battery. Took it out for 2 hours now with unplugged PSU. Didn't help at all.

To reset the BIOS you have to take out the CMOS battery, swap the jumper pin thing, boot for about 10 seconds and then reverse the steps again.

This is obvs an old image but they look similar to this:

yeah also true. so i'll go with the mpower mainboard and the new CPU and i hope it will work. Btw what is actually the reason the CPU burned through? Probably too high voltages i guess? i'm not an expert on electronics and physics :D

lol definitely high voltage judging by those burn marks. Something probably gave out due to a combination of heat and torture. Probably exceeded 1.4-1.5v by the time it went, maybe more.
