Hello all,

I have this motherboard: http://us.msi.com/product/mb/K9N6PGM2V2.html#hero-overview and this CPU: http://products.amd.com/pages/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=562  Yes, I realize this system is old, and probably not worth upgrading, but it makes a good experiment platform. I wondered what suggestions would be for the best "bang for your buck" CPU that I could upgrade to. Budget under 100$(if possible, if not possible budget no object)

Thanks

Erty

Does not having a second parenthesis around something bother anyone else as much as it does me? (Like if this statement was missing a second side)

his CPU socket is AM3. Would that work with any of the vishera processors?

I know but AM3 was made so it can support DDR3 right? and the motherboard says DDR2..

if it is AM3 6300

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

No I definitely linked the right ones. I do realize how confusing it sounds. Give me a second to check to make sure. That is definately the motherboard. It is an MSI K9N6PGM2-V2.(read it right off the board)

did you mean the 250e?

EDIT: that is AM3 too

I figured it out its a AM3/AM2+/AM2 mobo

I vote AMD Phenom II X6 1055T

Thats that. If you need to get in touch chances are you can find someone that knows me that can get in touch.

This is what the computer tells me, it could be a 250e theres no way to tell for sure because the cpu cooler is on it. Also theres 4 gigs of ram in the system. It's only saying 2 for some reason, but that's another day.

well we fixed it

How can a motherboard be compatible with all those sockets? I thought the sockets were different sizes and such.

AM3 was designed to be backwards compatible since like now people didnt want to push for the new RAM

Good to know. Could I then also upgrade the ram to DDR3? or do i just stick with the DDR2 that's in there.

nope DDR2 only

:( Oh well, I could at least put it dual 4gb kits. I'm sure DDR2 is very cheap now considering we are on DDR4 haha

AM3 CPUs work in an AM2 board at reduced HyperTransport frequency (capped at 1GHz), and AM2 CPUs work in AM3/AM3+ boards. That used to be the beauty of AMD.

A phenom II 965 BE would be a decent upgrade, but I think you are best served saving your pennies to do a full upgrade to an i5.

Also an FX series may or may not work, depends on if the BIOS for the board was updated or not. Some were and after taking a look at the info on the website, this one was not.

The New Machine: Intel 11700K / Strix Z590-A WIFI II / Patriot Viper Steel 4400MHz 2x8GB / Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC w/ Bykski WB / x4 1TB SSDs (x2 M.2, x2 2.5) / Corsair 5000D Airflow White / EVGA G6 1000W / Custom Loop CPU & GPU

The Rainbow X58: i7 975 Extreme Edition @4.2GHz, Asus Sabertooth X58, 6x2GB Mushkin Redline DDR3-1600 @2000MHz, SP 256GB Gen3 M.2 w/ Sabrent M.2 to PCI-E, Inno3D GTX 580 x2 SLI w/ Heatkiller waterblocks, Custom loop in NZXT Phantom White, Corsair XR7 360 rad hanging off the rear end, 360 slim rad up top. RGB everywhere.
