CPU Burned out? Troubleshooting help

Go to solution Solved by Casperian,

Most likely a blown Dr MosFET. Look under the motherboard heat spreaders near the VRM. If I am right about that FET blowing, which I hope I'm not. that probably means a dead CPU.

I tried turning on my desktop today, something I've done thousands of times, but today was different. Smoke came out of the back of the case, and I panicked and immediately unplugged it. I removed the GPU and all the drives, to make sure nothing would burn out with further testing. The mother board wreaks of smoke. I'm not sure if it's the CPU or the board itself.

How can I test which it is? I tried booting again, and it just turns on in pulses. On for about a second, and off for another second or two.

Thanks I'm advance for any help.

Motherboard is probably fried, looks for burnt spots or bloated parts that could have little bubbles, it could have taken the cpu with it. :(

And check the psu too.

Actually, what are your full specs?

Its an I5-4670k, corsair cx500, and a gigabyte, H97m-wifi

I'm thinking PSU, that power supply is known for some pretty shitty components inside. Have a spare sitting around?

I found some charred IC's, not exactly sure where to look for a MOSFET, but there's some IC's that are blown. One on the bottom of the board, one up top.

MosFET stands for Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor, It's an IC. If they were the ones controlling the CPU voltage, it is hard to say if the CPU is okay. If those IC's failed and caused a voltage spike or drop, the CPU will not be happy. Any IC hates changing voltage, especially extremely complex ICs like a CPU or GPU

Thanks everyone for your responses. I just finished testing everything. This is the conclusion:

CPU = unfortunately dead

Motherboard = RIP

PSU = unsure, but filed an RMA. Not risking anything else

GPU = good, but smells like charred electronics.

Luckily all my drives survived.

Irrelevant to the original post, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should rebuild? Any component I had that I should stay away from?

:(

Sucks that happened,

As for parts to stay away from, anything PNY. Just don't.

Also, mark topic as solved please.
