Looked up DNA tests

Why are they so damn expensive?

I looked up what a DNA test was for fun, to see how much it would cost.

They usually start at 100 euro for just a basic test and if you want to know about your ancestry it can go up to 350-400 euro? O_0

Maybe I will do it one day, but not now, seeing as it costs so much and I don't have money for that. (My heritage is pretty interesting I think)

My heritage ends at the Armenian Genocide

oh wow. Sorry to hear.

Mine would have ended at the Assyrian Genocide but some survived, so  my ancestors survived or I wouldn't be here.

Sorry to hear.

I have no family so guess I don't have one

Now that I looked it up, the 2 genocides were closely related :P

Sorry what? I haven't experienced any hindrance by it, it was a LOOONG time ago done by the Ottoman empire.

Also, you could do a DNA test to see your heritage.

How I came from a country that does not even use that. They don't even have records there except for the adoption.

They're expensive because it takes a lot, a LOT of man hours and machine hours, relatively speaking, to analyze DNA strands like that. All that stuff you see in CSI is Hollywood making you think that they can do the tests quickly. It doesn't. It takes weeks at a time.

High skill - high technology.

Whilst the field is making leaps and bounds it's still very much a cutting edge science.

Last I'd read the time it takes to analyse a persons DNA is down to around 15 hours now. Compare that to the first mapping of the genome...

What about someone who came from a warzone and was a baby because of the war. Like me? I came from a 3rd world country. How do I find this family that left me to die on the streets so I can thank them for not caring.

Wouldn't lowering prices based on your background be considered discrimination?

DNA testing it's self is actually really fast, in forensics though it takes ages to develop enough sample to analyse but the analysis it's self is still fast.

Testing if two people are related is a fast process because you will always have enough sample but it's not usually urgent so you have to wait a while (I might be wrong but I think they do it in batches once they have enough samples) and it's far from cheap due to the needed people and lab supplies.

(I'm a chemist, not entirely my area but the technique is based on chemistry)

How do they check your ancestry? Don't they need the dead people to test your dna with? Sorry if I sound super dumb, I have no idea how this stuff works lol.

They examine genetic markers from populations in geographic areas and then cross reference your sample to the data on hand.

EDIT:

They can also look at specific markers found in people due to mutations or varying evolutionary patterns. Eg: People from certain European areas or colder weather regions actually are missing a gene to help prevent sunburning (such as with me).

Yup. The genre which causes blue or green eyes is linked to our light sensitivity. It has to relate to the amount of mealtonin we can produce.

For me, I pretty much stay a consistent very light tan throughout the year. Anything more than 15-20 minutes of sun, and i'll be as red as a lobster. I also have light sensitivity, due to the same gene which gave me green eyes and golden brown hair.

Probably not. My family is from Transylvania in a region of the Carpathian mountains (before it became part of Romania). My ancestry also dates back to Germany as the settlement in Transylvania where my family lives was populated by Germans. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transylvanian_Saxons

Yeah but with that I mean to say that vikings usually had those features too. :P
