Better CPU or another GPU

Go to solution Solved by Faceman,

my motherboard is h61m-ds2 ..

i bought it 2 years ago...

That motherboard is compatible with:

i5-2500

i5-2500k

i7-2600

i7-2600k

i5-3330

i5-3570

i5-3570k

i7-3770

i7-3770k

You will not be able to overclock though.  If you are trying to save money while still getting good performance for the next 5+ years, go for one of those i7s, locked or unlocked.  As Steve pointed out above, in all but the most CPU bound games, there isn't much variance except for a few FPS between 3rd and 4th gen Intel processors.

If you are trying to make incremental upgrades.  I would go for one of those i7s I mentioned above + a GTX970.  At a later date, if you buy a "k" processor, you can buy a compatible older Z series motherboard and overclock it.

Don't be afraid of used components if you can verify that they are working.  A used i7-2600k for ~$160-$180 is a fantastic deal. It will slide right into your current motherboard and provide excellent performance.

Upgrade to an i5, and a GTX 970. A 500W will be plenty as long as it is decent quality.

You don't have to upgrade motherboard. You can re-use your current mobo with an Ivy Bridge CPU and there is very little performance difference compared to a Haswell i5 of the same clock speed.

Interestingly not compatible with my dad's i5-3340

It should be.  My bad if I didn't mention it in that list.

Dont you lose couple features that you get with the new versions of motherboards? like fan expert 3... al suite 3... i heard that some of them are really usefull for gaming. and from what i've checked the old 1155 motherboards dont include them : something like z77 extreme3 1155

I think i'm gonna get 3770k (the only one still available in my country)and stick with my motherboard.

thank you very much for all the help you gave me and everybody who commented... i will leave this topic for couple hours and then "solve it".
