Good program for 3D model for a wallpaper?

I've been wanting to model something's in 3D then put them on a wallpaper to have that nice 3D effect.

 

Right now I'm just thinking of making some 3D 8bit characters so it shouldn't be too hard and could probably be made in Illustrator.

 

Anyone have some pointers?

Blender is best. I made this in like less than an hour with (nearly) zero background in 3D. 

 

The open-source community is amazing for blender. REALLY AMAZING.u6nTw9M.jpg

 

​EDIT: I do have a background in lighting and material design.

I might be wrong.
