FX-6300 bottleneck 970?

Go to solution Solved by thebennyboy,

The i3. It will still bottleneck a bit in some games but will run better generally than the FX-6300.

So i guess the title says it..

My friend wants to do a build for around 700€, and i think the fx-6300 is the best option so i wanted to know if it will bottleneck a gtx 970 or should i go for the i3-4160?

Thanks, bye

This^

Then you upgrade to the 4460 or better after a while and destroy the fx6.

Depends, it will bottleneck a bit but not noticeable. If your game is CPU reliant, the bottleneck is very noticeable.

It will, but not very much. If he could save for longer and get an 8 core or i5(I would pick the i5), it would be better. But if that's all he can do, the 6300 will work.

The 6300 will overclock well, and also has around the same overall performance at stock frequencies, so that's important to note. The i3 has a little better single core performance though. In this situation I would pick the 6300.

The 8 core fx chips are as bad of a choice as the fx6300.

It depends on the games: MMO's you must have Intel. FPS's and other games, you could go AMD or Intel... but in the end, you should have gone Intel. ;)

Here are some good budget options in three price brackets:

1) Pentium G3258 + B85 or z97 Mobo + CM Hyper 212 Evo (Optional CPU Cooler if z97 Mobo is selected)

2) >=i3-4150 + H81 or H97 Mobo

3) >=i5-4460 + H81 or H97 Mobo

CPU: Intel i5-4690k                                                               RAM: 16gb Corsair Vengance Pro DDR3-2400                                                                     Case: NZXT S340

Cooler: CM Hyper 212 Evo                                                  Storage: Intel 730 SSD                                                                                                            PSU: EVGA 850G2

Mobo: Asus Z97-A 3.1                                                          GPU: 980ti G1                                                                                                                          OS: Windows 10 Pro

Skip to where he starts using the gtx 970 ...  1:50

6300 bottlenecks the 970 from what the video shows.

For BF4 it seems to bottleneck, because its a CPU intense game, you might be ok in less intense CPU usage games.

One friend of mine still plays games fine with a 6100, and another still uses an eight core, and one friend had an 8 core for a while and it worked fine. AMD CPUs are fine.

That's right. They're fine. But they'll still bottleneck, and there are still better options all across the board. Why get a soft drink for 4 bucks that you kinda like when you could get one for the same price that you love?

If you're going with a z97 mobo, I assume you'll be upgrading to a 4690k/4790k later?

OK. The 4690k will still be plenty relevant for at least two years, probably more.

the FX6300 will work fine with last gen gpu cards, but hooked upto a 970 well you could always do that and then just run in high settings so less work on the cpu.

but if its all new from what i still see with the Intel / AMD war is that Intel is more future proof right now and you can also find cheap stuff on ebay if your lucky.

its almost like if you want to save a little then you can do a cheap all AMD build and it will run games, but just isn't going to futureproof for very long.

a 979 isn't cheap, you might have to look at other alternitives, like find some used last gen gpu's on ebay or somewhere and crossfire / Sli a rig to make it as good as a single 970 at less cost.

i run a FX6300 and have no problem gaming in all the new games but that's because it matches the gpu's i run in crossfire and if i was to change them out for a new 970 i am not sure how it will perform, every pc is different with different components.

got to love Asus components

If your friend was intending to upgrade I would agree go with i3 for now.
